Two Bass, One Rapala

Okay so I wanted to see how rare or common it is for someone to catch two fish on the same rapala at the same time. Last year I caught a couple 12 inch largemouths on a shallow diving rapala minnow. This year taking my kayak out for the first time I caught two 17+ inch largemouths on a deep diving rapala largemouth look-a-like. Has anyone around here done this before? Just wondering that if it does happen again, whether or not to keep and mount the double or to release them again. Thanks for all the input

I can't comment on the rarity of it, but If you want to mount them next time, or any other fish, why not take some good pics for a replica mount and release them.

I would say that two 17"+ largemouth being hooked on the same lure is a little unusual to say the least. I bet that was a heck of a fight!

As to whether you should have released them or had them mounted, that's entirely up to you. Though I'd be tempted to say that you did the right thing releasing them.

It has happened to me twice. I used to love popping the five/six inch Rapala floating minnows back home when I was a kid. Then I learned how to "walk the dog" and never went back.

It has never happened to me, but last year, on the James, my son had a double on a Rebel bumblebee.

The fight wasn't too bad actually, i think they kinda cancelled each other out. I was using my ultralight fenwick with 6 pound on which def still took some finessing. I got a pic on my phone but its barley visible, next purchase being a waterproof camera haha. I was on Springfield lake just running the crankbait through some spawning beds bouncing it off the bottom. My guess was that it was a territorial strike.

In the fall of the year when they are feeding up for the winter, it happens frequently on my floats. Bass are schooled and really turned on. When fishing with a friend, when one hooks one, the other usually tosses into the same area and hooks up frequently. I use the size 11 or 13 and come up with doubles several times a year, mainly in late summer and early fall.

I'd guess it happens to me about once a year or so at most. The way it usually happens is that one fish gets hooked and the other one follows it around trying to take the lure away, and gets hooked as well. Once or twice, though, I've actually seen both fish hit at the same time. But it's usually smaller fish--two 17 inchers is pretty unusual. Although one of the two biggest Ozark stream smallmouth I ever caught tried to take the lure away from one I had on that looked to be about 18 inches. The big fish got hooked, then the smaller one got off. The big one was just under 22 inches and 5 pounds.

And one time long ago on a smallish public lake, I hooked two largemouth in the 6 pound class at the same time, but one of them escaped as well.

I caught a couple of real small striped bass on a silver rapala. My friend had a couple of 12" largemouths on once. He yelled at me to come see it so I wouldn't think it was a fish story.

I throw cranks and jerkbaits a lot so it happens to me a couple of times a year - usually by Smallmouths. I've never doubled with anything bigger than about 13" or 14" fish, so no pictures or keeping them.

Like I would keep one anyway...
