Members The Kayak Kid Posted September 1, 2011 Members Posted September 1, 2011 Any other Black River fishermen out there? I fish the section near Cave Spring (about 4-5 miles above K Bridge) several times each year. Catching lots of smallies, but nothing big. Mostly 10-12 inchers. I heard a positive report someone received from MDC, regarding smallies in this stretch. However, I always wonder if the locals are over-harvesting. If you've seen the pavilion near Cave Spring, that's us. Several property owners, including us, back up in the hills. If anyone wants to organize a trash pick-up/fishing trip, holler. I get down there pretty often. "There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot." — Aldo Leopold RiverStamps™ - vinyl decals for your kayak or canoe

We catch several big smallies every year out of the Black but, as you said I don't know if it's locals or whoever they put a beat down on the Smallies in the Black. It's unfortunate but, it's reality. You are correct the MDC produced some very impressive results, if you pm me I will send you pics of some the fish they tagged.I met one of the gentleman who was doing the tagging and he gave me pics. As a matter of fact where your pavillion is we caught a 19 incher this July 1rst, your area is awsome right there. As you know those bass in the Black are an educated bunch of fish that not only see alot of pressure but, they see alot of pressure from bait fisherman, which makes them even more tight lipped. The trophies are in there, they are just very smart and I have found that in the Black you really need to be down which can be hard to do with the current there. It always seems impossible to get your lure where it needs to be for any lenght of time to entice the hit. It can be a tough river to fish which is why I like it, and that also seems to keep some people away after they have fished it once.....which I love about that river as well. If you ever know ahead of time that you are going to do a clean up please pm me and I will be there with my trailers, vessels and trucks to help. I truly love the area down there and it's the least I can do as an avid user of the resource.

I have not been down there in about a year but I have heard that the fishing is much better this year than last. Last year, we caught fish but they were all small, but I hear the bigger sized fish are back. I am a novice when it comes to river fishing, last year we caught ours on 4 inch curly tail grubs on jig heads and soft plastic crawdads. Any other suggestions? I'd really like to get my kids on some fish this year. I understand if you don't want to give away your secrets. Can't wait to get out there!
ciRe Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 I fish right off my buddies property and do pretty good. He owns between "Tommys Place" and "dakota ridge" I caught a 18" smallie down by black river campsite on Memorial Day weekend.
Members Adamg Posted November 17, 2011 Members Posted November 17, 2011 The Black river is one of my favorite places in the state to fish for smallies. My brother and I get down there often. We have landed many 18+ fish from this gorgeous river. Sadly I have personally witnessed locals overharvesting fish and tossing empty beer cans and trash in the stream. Ive called mdc but they cant get there on time to catch them in the act. Hopefully I can someday own some property down on the river.
