Mark Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 I'm considering putting together a fly in fishing trip for next June. I am considering Canada or Alaska. I have never made one of these trips and I'm looking for suggestions from your own personal experiences. How much? where? type of fishing? All aspects of the trip that I should consider would be appreciated. Something I've always wanted to do.

kevthebassman Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Guy I work with did one up to Canada. He said the fishing was so ridiculous that by about day 4 they were almost tired of pulling walleye and pike out of the water one right after the other. I think they caught a Musky or two as well. He said the mosquitos were insane, the trick to it was to stay drunk enough that you didn't notice you were being eaten alive. It sounded like a blast to me.
Al Agnew Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 I think you have to choose your outfitter carefully, especially in Alaska. I've done a few fly-in trips. The one thing you have to remember is that small planes are like automobiles in Alaska...lots of them, and they go anywhere they can land. So a fly-in trip that sounds like a pure wilderness experience can instead just get you to a place with about 100 other fly-in customers. That happened to me a couple of times. One time we flew into a "wilderness" cabin that happened to be in amongst about 50 other cabins and small resorts. Another time we flew into a lake that was supposed to have a big salmon run into the lake and then into the stream feeding the lake. I asked and they said it was all public land with no cabins or development. True. But when we landed on the lake there were about 20 other float planes already parked there, and the inlet stream looked like Maramec Spring on opening day. So ask a lot of questions about what it's REALLY like, how many other people you can expect to see, etc.
Gilly Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 We go to Slim's Cabins in Canada. You can drive to Slim's or fly to the closest airport and they'll pick you up. Once at the.lodge you can do one.of several fly outs to different lakes in the area. The walleye fishing is fantastic, muskee too. I'll attach a link when I get home. http://www.slimscabins.com/ www.drydock516.com
Members Sunfish45 Posted September 8, 2011 Members Posted September 8, 2011 I don't know how it got in my postal mailbox, but I got a catalog from "The Fly Shop" in Redding California. They have a large list of camps that they represent, that look interesting. I would also check out Larry Czonka's "North to Alaska" TV program and website. I am going through the same process as you.....Ralph
exiledguide Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 I've been to NW Ontario's Cedar Lake from 1982 till 1999 almost every year. I flew in for a day twice and fishing was much better but fishing normaly is fantastic at the drive in fishing camps. We always tried to be up there around the first day of summer. Pretty well the Smallmouth, Walleye, Yellow Perch and Nortern Pike fishing was great. Cedar is supposed to be a top muskie lake but we had very little luck with them. We stayed with 5 different owners at 2 different camps and they all were great. I fished one time at Cliff Lake across the highway, all these lakes are connected on the same flowage, for Lake Trout. You might want to Google Ontario Sunset or Lost Bay Resort On Cliff Lake or Jerry and Ellies Cedar Lake Camp. They both have Great Smallmouth fishing. Also once we once went around July 20 worse trip ever hot and very few fish and once the saturday after Labor day and ice and snow started that monday but the fishing was good. All the fishing camps and outfitters have packages where cabin boat motor and gasoline for one price. Make sure you bring a good Gore Tex rain suit. The only thing that keeps me from going back is my age. I,ve been to Alaska twice on cruises but I,ve never fished there but I'm sure that would be Great also but Ontario is a lot closer, cheaper and Alaska has no Smallmouth.
exiledguide Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Should have read Ontario Sunset Contry. Old age.....
