Please don't laugh this time! I bought a Hi-Point C9 at a gun show yesterday.

On a firearms forum where I probably spend too much time I've read so much about how horrible these things are, then others praise them. So I thought for a buck and a half, why not find out for myself. I doubt if I get to the range this week for a run through, but my first impressions are:

For sure you can see that it is made at low cost.

Taking it apart for cleaning looks like a royal pain! "drive the retaining pin out" I gave it a couple taps, and it didn't move. I think this one will get cleaned without removing the slide!

As clunky as it looks, it actually feels pretty good in my hand.

The slide requires a lot of umph to pull back. ( But so does my S/A XD-40 Sub, and G20 Glock)

The safety that some have complained about was very tight at first, but with a little oiling, and working it on and off, it got better.

The magazine locks in securly ( another complaint I've heard), and falls free when the release is pressed.

The trigger isn't very comfortable on my trigger finger.

The trigger pull....A GO-RILLA on steroids is needed to pull it! Sure hope that is another thing that will "wear in"

All in all, for about $150 out the door, it might be a fun range toy.

The only thing I regret is that the dealer that sold it to me didn't have a brown papper bag I asked for to get it out of the place without anybody seeing that I bought a Hi-Point!

I've owned a hi-point before, not the prettiest gun in the world, but mine shot fine and I kept it in the truck glove box all the time. Would I depend my life on it...no,but its better than nothing. If the goal for Hi-Point is for everyone in America who can legally own a gun, find one at a price point that works for all americans, then they have done their job.

Good luck with the gun and have fun!

I would, but I just can't get the hang of holding it sideways!

Now,if that thing shoots better than my Beretta 92fs, I'm gonna be ticked!!!

Not really, just another range toy.

lol...I was going to say something along those lines until I scrolled down and saw this.

Funny thing happens around the gun shop, we get a higher than normal amount of declines from the ATF on that type of weapon as opposed to the other fine guns we sell. They must sterotype like I do!

It is what it is, a $150 firearm (or less). A handgun that is listed as a compact that weighs almost 2 lbs unloaded! Give us a range report and tell us how it shoots..

The carbines are fun to play with and are a pretty good deal also.

I can see that because of the customer that would be drawn to a $150 pistol. Except for a goofball like me that buys one just to see how bad it can be! LOL

Sometimes I don't expect much in a firearm. If it goes bang, and something other than parts go downrange, I'm happy. If I actually hit the target, I'm ecstatic!

Will do. Probably not until next week. Gettin' ready for a long 4-wheelin' weekend. With the bad hip, and subsequent hip replacement surgery the Polaris hasn't seen dirt in almost 2 years!!!

I know this thread is a few weeks old, but there's nothing wrong with a Hi-Point. Thats all I will say about that.

You're right, and here is my range report to show it!

On the gun forums you will see a lot of out, and out phobia about Hi-Points. Mostly because of the ZAMAC slide, and low cost production. Most of those comments are from gun snobs that think if you can't afford a Sig, Kimber, Kahr, etc., you shouldn't have a gun.

I just bought the Hi-Point C9 on a whim to prove to myself what they were, so here goes.

I loaded up a mag with 8 rnds of some old Olympic 9mm 115 gr. that I had on the shelf. First round, after a rather long, rough hard trigger pull, Band. Low and left. second rounf low and left about an inch from the first. third shot within 2" of the other two. Brand new gun, off hand, and not really trying. Still getting used to the trigger. BUT....Failure to feed the 4th round. Oh, OH, the Hi-Point blues have begun. I used the remaning 12 rounds to sight in @ 19 yds without another failure. then I switched to some UMP 115 gr. and Winchester U.S.A. Not one FTF after that third round! About 170 rnds total! I did have problems with some cheapo Russian steel case stuff. About once or twice in every 8rnd mag full I had to bump the back of the slide to make it go into battery. I chalked that up to the cheap ammo.

I did a little comparison shooting with 2 of my other 9's. Here is the result.

5 rnds, @10 yds. off hand, defence stance, two hands, rapid fire. Pick up the gun from the table and shoot. Caldwell 5.5" targets.

L=Beretta 92fs C=Hi-Point C9 R=FEG P9RC (updated Browning Hi-Power copy)

And then an even more pleasant surprise!

25 yds off a rest. 5 rnds 6 O'Clock hold:

C to C group = 1 1/2 inches!!!

The trigger is way from being good, but with some practice I starded getting used to it. A long, gravely, rough pull at first, but I learned I could "stage" it just before it released the striker. Maybe with some more shooting it will smooth up a bit.

Reliability with decent ammo was 100 % after that fourth round FTF.

The Hi-Point won't replace my Springfield Armory XD40 Subcompact for CCW, but it's gonna be a fun range toy. A buck and a half well spent!!!
