Newbie - Crane Or Capps?

New guy here - new to this forum and to fly fishing MO trout.

I'm traveling to Tulsa for business this Friday (09/30/11), and want to spend the day Saturday fishing my way back to my home in Lee's Summit.

I'm not a new fisherman per se (I can read a creak, river, pond), I'm just not the best fly flinger in the world. Would you recommend Capps or Crane Creek for a new guy. I won't leave Tulsa until Sat morning so it would be around 8a by the time I could hit the water at Capps, maybe an hour later for Crane, but I plan to fish all day. I've read all the reports and reviews so I have a good idea of what flies to take out, I'm just not sure where to start.

Thoughts?

I would hit Crane just on the fact that Capp's has not had a stocking since early last March.

Okay, take this with a grain of salt, because I myself have yet to land a McCloud on Crane, but I would opt to stop in Crane. Capps can be a lot of fun, but likely the other guys said, it's going to be really tough right now--tougher than it typically is. It's more of a put-and-take fishery, and it's been a while since they've been "put." You might consider just doing some recon on Crane. I might be out there Saturday morning, so if you see a tall lanky guy not catching fish, give me a shout. I drive a blue Prius with trouty stickers on the back glass.

Ok, I'll go against the others on this one. Go for Capps. I fished it last week and while I only landed one brown you will have cover and darker water on your side. I agree that Crane is a gem, but the trout being native are a LOT more spooky than Capps IMO. Both are low right now, and Chief I think is right about the stocking at Capps. However I do think they stocked Capps with browns this summer and there should still be some in there I would think. Hey, it's just my take though. What a choice though!! :have-a-nice-day:

From Tulsa to Lee's Summit. Wouldn't the Roaring River be closer? I know it isn't the same as Crane, but, it would be closer. (I think). Hey! Don't laugh, I'm just throwing out options. :)

I would definitely pick Crane over Capps this time of year. Awesome creek. I'm with Phil though, Roaring River should be closer and easier fishing overall. The hopper fishing should be outstanding still on RR. Just a thought....

Thanks for all the info guys. I suppose Roaring River could be on the way from Tulsa to Lees Summit, but I usually hot-foot it from Tulsa to Joplin on I-44 and the smaller creeks are closer to Joplin.

It's all a moot point now as my trip got canceled. No worries though - there's plenty of water here at home. No trout of course, but plenty of bass, crappie and bluegills coming to the fly now that the weather is cooling down.

Thanks again folks.

I was thinking the same thing! It won't be crowded and there will be lots of fish. You also don't need waders.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
