snagged in outlet 3
I hope someone on here can help me. I want to tie a black and yellow streamer similar to the black and yellow jig everyone uses in the parks. I was going to use a Dairiki #700 streamer hook. 1) Is this a good hook style for this? 2) When finished will it ride hook down or up? 3) Which way should it ride, hook up or down? 4) Should I pile all the marabou on top or tie some in under eye? 5) Need to know which side to put the colors so the black is on top and yellow on bottom. 6) Should I just use a jig hook instead? 7) Can you cast and fish a jig hook fly with a flyrod? I hope I am making sense? Thanks in advance. Snagged.
MTM
Snagged- The Dai-Riki #700 is a very good hook for tying your streamers on. I use them myself and I tie for a living. As for the Jig hook. It can be used for tying a fly on as long as it doesn't have the lead on it. It will not fish as well but will work in a pinch. The Dai-Riki #700 hook is Down eye, 1x strong, 4x long, Round Bend, Bronze Finish and comes in sizes #1 through #16 You can tie your streamer in two ways One with the yellow under the hooks eye with the Black on top of the hook's shank. Or you can tie it with both colors on top of the hooks shank. Tie the yellow on fist then the black on top. The hook will ride hook point down in both cases. About the only way to get the hooks to ride point up would be to put lead eyes on top of the shank just behind the eye of the hook. Here is a link just to show you what the hair or marabou sould look like when it is tied on top of the hook. http://www.danica.com/flytier/tdidas/gate_crasher.htm The lighter color should always be the bottom color on a streamer. That is in most cases. One thing to remember is that most new tiers use to much material in the wings of there flies. Don't use to much it will take away from the action of the wing . Also keep the wing just a bit longer than the hook. If you get it to long you may miss fish do to short strikes. Here is one other fly to look at so you can get an idea of what it may look like with the marabou or hair tied under the hook eye. This is a hair wing but Marabou can be used in the same way. http://www.danica.com/flytier/msmith/thund...ek_streamer.htm Hope that helps you out a bit. If my camera had not been lost in the flood we had I would tie one and show you how it should look with the black and Yellow wing. snagged in outlet 3
Thanks MTM. I use that hook for buggers but they are all one color so it didn't matter. I wanted to make sure the thing wasn't upside down. I'm going to put the yellow under the eye and see how that works. With no weight this fly won't sink much will it? If I use a full sink line I'm hoping it won't hang on the bottom since it rides point down. Snagged.
MTM
No it should not sink to bad on you but with a full sink line you will have to keep track on the depth of water you are fishing and how long you let it sink. You can always put a weedguard on your streamers. Not to hard to do either. Just tie in some 6 to 8 pound Mono at the tail and wrap it with thread down the bend of the hook about half way. Let it hang and tie your fly. Now take the mono and run it through the eye of the hook ( make sure the loop that you are forming with the mono is below the hooks bend and point when you have it through the eye were you are going to tie it in) warp it with thread just behind the eye and to the bottom of the shank when you have caught it down there then fold the mono over and catch it on top of the hook and finish the head trim off the excess and you have a weedless streamer. ( -> ) The stright line is the hooks shank and the "V" on it's side is the way the mono should be folded and tied down with the point of the "V" being were the hooks eye is. This is for a person tying right handed if left handed reverse it. Harder to explain it than to do it. Ron
