I guess they are doing a study to see if the triploids grow faster and bigger, I think they are having trouble with them in the hatcheries so it may be a moot point in the future anyway. Not an issue of trying to keep them from reproducing, just a growth thing I believe.

I have said it before, I am all for triploids in all of missouri's waters. It could help put missouri back on the map for large rainbows instead of the midgets we now produce. Fish like the one that Bman just caught, is a monarch in "our" waters, but just another nice catch elsewhere.

I think their growth depends totally on the river they are in. Taney grows big fish, the more natural streams will always vary. Smaller ones have less food fish grow slower live harder lives and die before they get huge, some of the bigger ones like NFoW have tons of crawdads, good bugs and fish grow pretty good, but they still have to deal with otters, eagles, stripers so they won't all grow to 18". Where is B-mans rainbow just another catch? the ocean.

I honestly don't know if I would agree with there being a ton of fish in the North Fork, having fished it off and on for years it doesn't seem quite the same or even close to what it used to be? What does MO Dept of Conservation say about the river?

If you are comparing to a stocked river not near the fish as some of them but enough to catch. Relying on natural recruitment definately makes it have it's ups and downs but it is what it is. With the exception of last winter we have had really good recruitment a few years previous to that. After seeing what's in there after shocking it isn't the fishes fault if you aren't catching any.

Actually I referred to it as a "nice catch elsewhere". 20 states show rainbow catches larger than the largest fish caught in missouri, which is 18lb 1oz. 10 are showing fish in the mid 20's to low 30's. Most trout fishing destinations in the west are showing 23 lb fish and much bigger. Not counting alaska, montana tops the list at 33 lb. Like I said, 15 lb and larger rainbows are caught on a yearly basis elsewhere.

I'm just saying that fish is a monarch anywhere, not just "another nice catch". But I think 20" fish are trophies.

Yes sir we should all be that fortunate sometime in our lives. I will take the 20 inchers any day of the week. My post was more about the triploids and just using Bman's fish as a reference point. I think the trips would grow larger than the resident fish in all locations, with probably the prime location at taney.

Probably correct, just wonder if it's worth the cost of production. The way the fish biologist made it sound was that they hadn't had real good luck rearing the triploids. The next question is: do you think it is as much of a trophy if it's a Frankenfish?
