Guest Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I have a 7 1/2 foot shimano clarus that I like, except for the length. The butt of the rod is just to thick and it makes the rod heavy. I want to shorten it to a length that would be a little more manageable out of a small boat or canoe. How difficult would it be to do something like this?
Gavin Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Not hard at all....tape up the butt and take a fine toothed hacksaw to it. Sand the end smooth and plug it with a dowel and some epoxy...Its a bit more involved if you want to install a new grip...but not that hard. Mudhole or Angler's Workshop sell everything you need in the way of rod building supplies. Cheers.
Al Agnew Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 What Gavin said! I've shortened the butts on many of my rods...the way I fish and the size of my hands, I don't need those long butts, and in my opinion, if the rod is of good quality and light weight, the so-called "balance" that the butts are supposed to provide is highly overrated. And long butts get in the way when I'm manipulating a topwater lure. I often don't even bother to plug up the end of the rod butt once I hacksaw it off. Might look a little trashy and unfinished, but it doesn't affect the use of the rod that I can see. Of course, it might hurt a little to do it to a $300 rod...but I don't own any $300 casting or spinning rods...or at least any that I actually paid that much for.
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 If the butt is what you want to shorten it is easy. The end cap will generally come off by heating it with a hair dryer. I can't speak for all rods but on my Falcon Low Riders I had to reshape the end of the cork and then cut the blank with a short protrusion. If you want to shorten the rod overall, more than can be achieved in the handle section, you generally have to sacrifice the present handle, cut the blank and then install a new handle. The biggest problem with this procedure is that it will change the overall characteristics of the rod and it might no longer be your favorite. In this case I would look for a rod I liked with a long handle that could be trimmed enough to make the overall length acceptable. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
dennis boatman Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I have never intentionally shortened a rod. However, I have shortened many in a car door... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
TroutRinger Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I have never intentionally shortened a rod. However, I have shortened many in a car door... Is it a spinning or baitcasting rod? and what action? I have 6'6" Clarus medium action baitcaster I'd trade you. EDIT: I bought this rod about 6-7 years ago and used it about 10 times. I liked it a lot until I used a 7'6" rod which I like a lot more. It's been sitting at home ever since so it's in great condition. Guest Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 It is a medium light spinning 2 piece. That sounds like a pretty good trade to me. I will PM you with the rod's details when I get home today.
