Members joe2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Members Posted October 3, 2011 I was wondering if you guys tie all your dry's with a indicator on top so you can see it when it is on the water. I have some beetles that has a orange piece of foam on top as a indicator but i switched to smaller ant and it was so hard to keep track of. I also have a few small like 18 or so elk hair caddis that this past summer i was having trouble tracking so do you guys do anything for this problem. Not sure why some dry fly have a indicator on top and some doesn't. Thanks

If the water currents are not crazy, tie the smaller dry as a 8 to 12 inch dropper off a larger fly that you can see and grease the line. If you can see a hit behind the larger fly set the hook. I use a 12 royal wulff and a 20 Griffin's Gnat and have good luck on flat water and great luck on broken water. On this set up, micro drag becomes your biggest problem so shorten up you drifts if you have to. I think that is why I do so much better on riffles and such.
Al Agnew Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I use some dries with "indicators", but usually it's the smallest dries that you'll really have trouble seeing, and if that's so, the indicator on top will also be small and will be of only marginal value...if the indicator is big enough to see well, it's probably big enough that it ruins the profile of the fly. So do what Mic said. Or just cast and watch the vicinity of where you think the fly should be even if you can't see it, and set up on any rise in that area. I don't mind not being able to see the fly except for the fact that you can't watch it to see if it's drifting drag-free.
