Feathers and Fins Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 and to see people (1 comes to mind)...shuffling and getting ticketed... I would LOVE to see that! Ok please inform me of, why the shuffle should be illegal if it is not already? I do not get over there all that often, but do know what it is but let me double check it. The shuffle is when an angler stands in the creek and moves his/her feet around to disturb aquatic wildlife from under the stones. If that is true then by simply walking or a heavy discharge does the same thing. Now last I heard Taney is a put and take fishery. MDOC stocks the lake for the purpose of anglers to take from the lake, hence put n take. Anyone who fishes over there must have a license and must abide by the size and species limit restriction and the license fee’s help pay for the resource which is a put n take resource. Now I seldom keep trout and understand the purist wish to catch a fish legitimately by fooling the fish I love to work my butt off to figure a pattern and then catch fish off what I learned and shuffling to me is really a tough one to say I am for or against. I know how I prefer to catch fish, but I also know most people are not blessed to get out as often as I am so when they go they want to catch fish. I’m going to ask the next couple questions as a newbie to fishing would ask. So those facts being out I do not understand why it should be illegal. The object is to Take fish is it not? We pay with our license fees for the operation of the hatcheries and the stocking of the fish? So the fish belong to all of us to take as we see fit with legal gear and legal size limits? Is this complaining about the shuffle really more a purist attitude? People want to catch and eat trout so what is the problem with shuffling? https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856

It will never be like the SJ unless the water is regulated, the SJ never has water releases that are extreme, if it comes up from 1000 to 2000 cfs it is done over a few days, not in 20 minutes, but it would be nice if Taney was like that. Members OldTackleCollector Posted November 2, 2011 Author Members Posted November 2, 2011 Thanks guys, for the comments. I was just deleting a bunch of photos from yesterday and thought I'd go ahead and post these too, just for the heck of it. All of the upstream cluster commotion yesterday certainly stirred up a feeding frenzy. At one point everyone in this photo had a trout on at once. I just thought this was kind of funny. Cue the "JAWS" theme. This super colorful Rainbow was in the short section above outlet 2's waterfall. It has a certain Monet-esque feel to it. - David M

Is this complaining about the shuffle really more a purist attitude? People want to catch and eat trout so what is the problem with shuffling? To me it's an ethics thing. Maybe it's a poor analogy, but I liken it to baiting deer or turkeys- you're putting a food item out there with the hope it'll attract and concentrate the animals, and make it easier for you to take one. I'm not sure it ought to be illegal, but IMO, it goes against the ethics of fair chase. Love the rainbow pic, OTC! <{{{><
Amish Bill Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I don't "shuffle" but if it's an ethics thing for most people shouldn't the fishermen in those pictures be getting away from where the food is being stirred up instead of surrounding it? Just curious! "Life's too short to fish with a dead minner..."
Outside Bend Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Eh. In the above photos the outlet is what's drawing the fish in, not the action's of anglers. I agree it's a gray area, but to me there's a difference between fishing a naturally productive area and intentionally trying to draw them in with food in hopes of making them easier to catch. IMO it's just more sporting to play on the fishes' terms, to find out where they're eating and why, than to try and drum up some fish by chumming them in. From a more ecological perspective shuffling can destabilize gravel beds and affect the aquatic invertebrates trout and their prey feed on. Anglers boots probably aren't as dramatic as boat props, but there's a lot of wading anglers in the upper parts of Taney, and a lot of places boats can't get. <{{{><
