I may be 3 and half hours from Taney and 4 from Mountain Home but by golly I live right in the heart of the Missippi fly way. Tomorrow is the dove opener!

Cut sunflowers, cool temps and good buddies. Can't beat it. Been up to the field a few times in the past 2 weeks and it seems that the hundreds of birds we had early may have left town with this cool weather. Doesn't matter it'll be a great day anyway.

Snagged.

How did the Dove hunting go? I havent been hunting for a few years but I used to hunt Doves, Ducks, Quail and Pheasant a lot. If I lived in a better area for it I could seriously get into Duck hunting. You are certainly in a great place for the migrations.

I would rather be fishin'.

I got five from my driveway Saturday. It was the first time I've shot dove. I placed a MOJO dove in the field next to the house while my daughter laughed at me. She stopped laughing when it started bringing in birds. Every time I went outside to check my smoked sausage on the smoker, I'd get a shot or two at the birds. They were marinated and grilled the next day. The first dove I've eaten in 20 years, good stuff.

 I bow my "hillbilly-dom" to you, Don...

That is, IF you were sittin' on a cooler full of beer when you were shooting...

We had a great hunt. 3 of us started Friday morning at 6:30. I shot the first dove at 7:15 and we were limited out at 9:30. It was cool and overcast. The birds just kept coming in. We would have been done earlier but we didn't have a dog and spent a lot of time looking for cripples. We didn't expect it to be that good since the cool weather moved in and a lot of birds moved out just before the season opened. We marinated them in Italian dressing, wrapped them in a piece of bacon and had a feast.

Two of us went back Sunday morning and only got 10 birds in 2 hours. Hoping to see more move in from up north in the next couple weeks. I'll report in when we go again.

It's nice to get out and enjoy a sport close to home without driving 3 or 4 hours. It's a big traditon around here. When I took the truck in for service today the guys that work there were asking how I did and they were eating some birds they shot. They had the grill going out back. Sometimes it's better late in the season when the big migrations start and we get new birds.

Only way he I will bow my "hillbilly-dom" to him is if he was sitting on the cooler of beer, in the back of one of the non-running pickups sitting in his yard and had his daughter fetch the doves for him while he his dog watched from under the front porch. :o:D:rolleyes:^_^

Yeah, I am hearing quite a few mixed results out here in KS. I personally haven't had a chance since we had a new addition to our family last Tuesday night, but wife gave me permision to go out hunting sometime this week. Hopefully she sticks to that and I can get me some doves. Teal season opens up this weekend for most of KS. Haven't had a chance to scout for them, but I am sure with the lack of water here in KS, probably won't be to hard to find.

Good to hear of your success Snagged. Captain, I hope you get a chance to go this fall.

I would have walked or driven to a better spot but I sprained my ankle at Roaring River 2 weeks ago and I'm not getting around too well. My 14 year old daughter retrieved the birds for me.

I am a little bit hillbilly and I have a cold one at the right place at the right time. However, I'm very strict about mixing alcohol with firearms and I do not drink when my kids are around. My daughter shot twice but missed.

I'll post my sausage recipe in the recipes section.

Good hunting.....Don

PS It wasn't a cooler I was sittin on. It was an old broken toilet I yanked out of the house last year. I lift the lid up and put ice in the bowl to keep those beers cold. Padded lid and backrest for good huntin.

I use to hunt Dove just after I was first married. Love to shoot them. I remember reading in Outdoor Life many years ago that the avarage is 25 shell's to 10 dove. Sounds about right to me LOL. I sure miss doing it. I use to take a couple of young guys that were in High School. They were the grandson's of a good friend. I remember the one brother use to load all of our shells for us. I also remember him laoding just enough powder in his brothers shells that the BB's just made it out the barrel. I had to break that one up LOL. It was sure funny at the time. Ron
