griffin Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Why would anyone want a flat bottomed jon boat for anything besides running our streams like the gasconade, etc? I'm assuming that you are referrring to a semi-v bottom jon boat. I ain't that old....but I'm old enough not to want to get pounded around by a flat bottomed jon boat on a lake with any decent waves at all. My SeaArk VPLD is raked like a bass boat, and a much smoother ride then a semi-v, and a flat bottom boat can't even compare a little bit....they just beat you up. Give me a flat bottomed boat and a 40hp jet and I'll fish all day on the meramec, big river, big piney, etc......BUT THAT'S IT!!! That boat is made for NOTHING else. griffin

griffin Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Man, I ain't knocking flat bottom jon boats, I still own one. You can't beat 'em for polling through a marsh or for navigating small streams with a jet or small outboard. But those suckers in a big version will beat you to death on open water, that's all there is to it. The only way you could reccommend one as an "overall" boat is if your brains have been rattled long enough from riding in one on a big lake. Back in the day, flat bottom was all you could get in a jon boat.........but back then, you coud still hunt Mastodons too. griffin
Members Rick F Posted January 25, 2006 Members Posted January 25, 2006 I am thinking of buying a new boat. My favorite place to fish is Tanycomo, and TRL to. Any thoughts of what would be the IDEAL boat for Tany. I was thinking maybe a Tracker bass boat with a jet... for easy moving up the trophy area. I have seen some fishing shows that feature funky boats for fishing fast moving trout streams out west and in Alaska. They are very pointed with high sides. I have had some troubles when Tany was in full generation mode. I have rented boats from Lilly quite a few times. Overall they did quite well, but not something I would invest in. Lilly had some 4 stoke engines that were just fabulous for slow speed. Thanks in advance! Just my 2 cents. I would find a boat that you feel comfortable fishing from as previously mentioned. However, the 4 stroke is not a necessity. First of all you are spending an extra 10-25% more money depending on motor size for your boat. The benefits of a 4 stroke is not worth the money unless you are fishing 4-5 days a week every week for about 4 years. But then again, I have heard from various mechanics and I believe it was mentioned earlier that a 4 stroke is more costly to fix and requires more maintenance the more hours put on it. I would get the best 2 stroke available and use the extra money for more or better fishing equipment. Come on, who doesn't need more fishing equipment. As for the whole quiet issue, I am sure you know fish don't hear like us. It doesn't matter if you have an 80's gas guzzler or an 06 4 stroke. They still hear you coming. Again, just my 2 cents.
Members Champ Posted January 31, 2006 Members Posted January 31, 2006 Another alternative to 4 stroke motor is the Evenrude E-tech. They are a 2 stroke, but will meet the new stringent EPA regulations. Supposedly about as quiet as a 4 stroke, less moving parts, lighter, and hardly need any maintenance. They have more torgue and are faster than other motors. I've read quite a bit on them, but haven't talked to many owners. They are fairly new and are concerns of quality. Anybody use one on Taneycomo?

I don't give a darn about fish hearing me coming.........I just like to be able to listen to the stereo and hold a conversation with the other guys in the boat without yelling. Sorry Champ.....that was meant for Rick....live with it. As for Evinrude...their last "big thing" left a bad taste in my mouth. griffin

The new E techs are the suppose to be the best on the market. As for having a conversation and listening to the stereo if that is why you have a boat then by all means it's a free country. Me, I talk while I fish and haul balls to the fishing hole. However Griffin, if you would have listened to what I wrote, I don't care if the fish hear me either, I was just stating that a 4 stroke is a waste of money with the new 2 strokes coming out. As a mater of fact, Bombardier thinks they are so great and sales are skyrocketing enough that Johnson will no longer sell 4 strokes above 40 hp in North America after this year.
Members Packman Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 I have a Supreme boat, but my father just got an Alumaweld boat out in Oregon somewhere. I think you guys should look at these boats, he has a 150 jet on it, and it is an all around fishing boat. Can actually go in shallower water than the Supreme, and handle big water as well with no problem. E
