Members copfisher Posted January 9, 2012 Members Posted January 9, 2012 I fished the niangua the weekend before last. I saw at least two or three areas that I would bet money were redds. About a year ago I spoke to someone from the MDC who told me that occasionally he would see redds as well but generally spawning is unsuccesful here and "on the record" the MDC states that there is no spawing activities in the niangua--nonetheless its interesting to see. Anyone else have a similiar experience in seeing these?
fishinwrench Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Its possible that the swept clean spots you saw are Sucker troughs. Hard to say without knowing exactly where they were. I've never seen any active redds on the Niangua, and honestly I can only think of a handful of places between the Spring branch and NRO where it would be likely to see one. I have caught a few par marked little squirts, and I dont doubt that some successful hatching happens occasionally.

In addition to what Wrench said, in many streams the conditions are right for the fish to go through the motions of a spawn so you will still see redds and other evidence of spawning even though no fry will/can be produced. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
