Bill Butts Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Greasy B, That would be a safe assumption that the hook was too weak. Was he bait fishing, jig or lure fishing or with fly tackle. The size of the hook is not critical, but the strength and sharpness are critical. If you can provide some additional details, I'll try to help and I'm sure the other guys will too. Bird Watcher Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 My buddy had the hook straightened on two swim baits this weekend before he landed a hybrid of about 6#. Did he have an incorrect hook? Drag. You have to let them run. You almost can't find a hook that will hold them if you don't let them run. I've had 65# braid popped and a zara spook broke completely in half while learning this lesson. On the other hand, I've also caught them up to 12# on a 1/4 ounce light wire lead head and 6# test mono. From the minute I set the hook on one until I land it, I am constantly adjusting my drag.

Yeah your right, I suspect he never anticipated a fish pulling so hard, next time...
