Members Newbie Fly Posted January 23, 2012 Members Posted January 23, 2012 Fished Sunday very nice to be at Mountauk during the winter. Much quicker to go from hole to hole without all the campers and feelling like your intruding on thier space. We fished from the handicap hole down. Hard to see the fish with the sky and mist, but all did pretty well and all using different tactics. One buddy was using a white thread jig (ala BBSP) Another peach glo bugs. I had a estaz egg peachy pink with a little hare's ear of the jbend , we also has one of our spinner friends with us and he used yellow and black marabou jig. All of us probably caught 20 or fish ... Mostly stockers but like I said hard to spot them..... Afternoon a hatch went off white gnat looking things not sure what they were. My one buddy tied on cream midge dry.. I went to light cahill wet fly and swinging them ' and for about an hour we were the only one's picking up fish.. 2:30 on went to the Current I swung and stripped an egg sucking sclupin and picked up 2 fish on the 3 first 3 casts. Same sort of hatch happend there late in the afternoon white /tanish I am not much of dry file guy and surely not sure of the hatches at the Current . I put on a big white wluff and dropped a crystal midge below in the film or just under and managed to pick off fish here and there.......... I am sure one of the veteran Current fishers could tell us " I fish therefore I am"
Members troutlinks Posted January 23, 2012 Members Posted January 23, 2012 Just a heads up Newbie, the stream is closed during catch and release from the handicapp access down to the start of the blue ribbon section. It is only open from the handicapp access upstream. You can always check at the lodge for the rules and regulations, there is a poster in the areas prior to going into the lodge. Wanted to let you know so you don't get into trouble on a future trip.
Members Newbie Fly Posted January 23, 2012 Author Members Posted January 23, 2012 So down stream from the handiocap bridge is closed during C&R ,, There were several other folks there and I m sure we saw the park ranger driveby a few times . I am sure one of the veteran Current fishers could tell us I enjoyed your (slightly illegal) report. During the winter hatches, if you're not sure what bug is hatching (and I usually am not either) a tiny Adams (think a #18 or even down to #22 or 24 if you enjoy a good headache) is usually a pretty good pattern to start with. Generally you're talking about either midges or little olives hatching this time of year. Occasionally you'll get a good afternoon caddis hatch but that's the exception to the rule. Glad you had a good time, it's sure nice down there in the winter isn't it? As for where you fished, yes, it's illegal to fish there during the winter, but an understandable mistake that would be easy for anyone to make. The signage is very poor ( I believe there is one sign in that stretch of stream saying that it's closed to fishing), and when I went down to that part of the creek to look around last weekend it was down, pretty well out of sight unless you were specifically looking for it. The MDC really ought to either get rid of the rule or get better signage up.
jah Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I fished the Blue Ribbon stretch last weekend (MLK) and saw at least 8 fishermen fishing the water at the campground. I thought that was illegal when I saw them, but didn't say anything as I was driving, and I tend to mind my own business if I'm not 100% sure I'm right about a rule. Jim
stlfisher Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I see people fishing that section and there is a lot of confusion. There are signs next too the stream that do say no fishing in spots, but there are definatley gaps. If you entered the stream upstream form the handicapped access and waded down toward the handicapped acess there are no signs to let you know that area you are entering is closed during C/R. Confusing for sure. I don't see why they close that section down anyway. If they say it is too protect the browns that migrate upstream during the late fall and early winter I might flip after the massacre that took place this summer.

Idylwilde Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 After fishing the Blue Ribbon area this fall & winter and talking to anglers every day that have been on it I can say that last summer we lost almost all of the 5+ Brown Trout out of the area. Over 40 trophy Brown Trout were taken out of the park in a 60 day period of fishing. Most all on bait and jigs. Knowing the time it takes to grow these fish it is a shame something can't be done to protect them inside the park. (20" limit 1 State Wide?) Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
stlfisher Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Ugh.... I am game for the regulations you proposed. Will never happen though. Release the brown's and eat the rainbows.
