exiledguide Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Sad news last night passing of Charlie Spoonhauer. Died from the same disease as my cousin did in 1999. Revitalized SLU basketball after putting SWMO on the basketball map. I liked him even more announcing games on television. He also was a symbol of what coaching was about, I just wish he could have been able to get a blue chip post player.
joeD Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I agree. Excellent coach who generally went unrecognized, except for his trademark turtlenecks. I think when Larry Hughes left SLU after his freshman year, Spoon saw the writing on the wall as far as the direction college basketball was going, and it hurried his exit from the coaching ranks. Too bad. I wish there were more coaches like him, competence coupled with a personality and sense of humor.
Guest TLewis74 Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Spoon was a class act and will be missed tremendously. Brought respect and put the Bears on the national map and took SLU to a point that they couldn't acheive under Rich Grower. If Larry Hughes would have stuck around, i'm sure "spoonball" would have had more than just a few "short" runs in the NCAA Tourney.
