Preface: Let's just assume right off the bat, that we all know it's about money. Good or bad, it is another subject altogether.

My take: Rivalries are built through time, where the collective histories of the people and institutions involved become so intertwined, that they have a life of their own. Generally, this is achieved through repetition and proximity. Fueled by the passions of successive generations as to their superiority. It is at once illogical, nonsensical, and wonderful, where elation and heartbreak are separated by just a free throw or field goal. Though the teams may belong to the same conference, their affiliation is not what drives the (any) rivalry.

That is why I'm so, I don't know, chafed maybe, that Bill Self (who may or may not speak for Kansas) has decided that since Mizzou is going to another conference, then, well, he'll just take his ball and go home and not play us anymore. Because, history be darn, MO isn't in the Big 8, 10, 12 anymore. That's why.

What? It's not as if the University of Missouri packed their bags and buildings and moved to Tuscaloosa. They're still in Columbia. Just a different conference. It changes nothing. The two colleges can play each other any time they want. Period. They are Kansas. We are Missouri. They still have a stupid chicken for a mascot, and will always have an inferiority complex compared to us.

So, Kansas and Mizzou , quit your childish posturing and play ball. History is a terrible thing to waste.

I agreed with you all way till you said this. Mizzou has said nothing but that they still want to continue the rivalry. Mizzoui has another rivalry on the other side of the state with the Fighting Illini. Seperate conferences made no difference there. Dry up KU and act like adults. If that is possible!

The rivalry actually goes all the way back to the civil war when Kansas militias actually attacked Missouri cities during the Civil War... Even THEN it was all about the money!

I love the rivalry, but I think that it's been many years since very many people even gave a thought about the supposed Civil War roots of it until ESPN started bringing it up all the time. I don't dislike KU because of ancient Civil War history, I hate KU because...they are KU. And it's always been good fun. It sure brought out the best (and/or worst) in the Antlers back in the day.

KU is just ticked off because Mizzou got a better offer while they are forced to stay in the train wreck that's the Bevo Conference until Bevo finishes wrecking it and KU ends up in the Mountain West or someplace.

I would have loved to see the Big 12 thing continue. Wish we would continue to play Kansas and Illinois. Also looking forward to playing Arkansas more often. To much fun for all to be had for it not to continue. The ones I feel for are Ku, K-State and Iowa State if the Big 12 does implode. What will happen to them. Geez, just bring back the old Big 8 days and I would be perfectly happy!!

Give it a few years and I think they will be back to playing each other. I think this is a more important rivalry for Mizzou than it is for Kansas. Since Mizzou refuses to play Missouri State they will never have an in state rivalry like KU has with K-State. Because KU has an elite basketball program they will always have good rivalries with other schools in their conference. I am a Mizzou fan but am upset about them jumping ship to the SEC. I don't really blame them for doing it, but you can't leave your wife and then expect her to still get freaky with you after a bad breakup, which is what Mizzou wants KU to do.

Mizzou will be left without a good rivalry until they can prove to be a year in and year out power in either football or basketball. The SEC schools won't feel much toward Mizzou because most of the schools are far away. If they realign the conference maybe an Arkansas/Mizzou rivalry could develop but they need to play every year to make it stick.

Even if KU and MU resume their rivalry it would most likely happen in the Sprint center leaving Columbia without the crazy atmosphere that is found in the border war game. As a sports fan, the first year or two in the SEC will be fun, but I'm afraid the luster will wear off, and while the school will have more money, they probably won't share it with the broken hearted fans who just want a good rival.

The MU/KU rivalry is one of the good things about sports in a time when so much is not-so-good. I don't know what the actual quote from Self is, but it doesn't really amount to much in the grand scheme anyway. But, there is a sense that the rivalry got flushed only because there was money to be made elsewhere. Not because of an inevitable meltdown of the Big 12, not because SEC and MU are such a good fit. That grates on a lot of folks, especially sentimental old farts like myself. It's natural for the one left behind to feel jilted, just like it's natural for the one that left to thumb their nose.

Missouri and Kansas Civil War roots are real, and an underpinning of the rivalry -- not something ESPN recently thought of or even just revived. It's not daily talk, but it's in the psyche of people around here, even if it's mostly a regional thing. The border wars prior to the Civil War were real, bloody and demonstrated the worst in mankind -- on both sides. Around here (KC) and Lawrence, there are a number of historical sites where the 'Bleeding Kansas' battles took place in the years leading up to the Civil War. Lawrence was sacked and burned of course, but there's also the battles of Osawatomie, Black Jack, Wakarusa and Marais des Cynges. The Kansas/Nebraska Act was the spark, Kansas' plan to enter the Union as a free state started things rolling, the border wars began and were a main cause of the war. That's important history, and KU's 'Jayhawk' is a constant reminder of that history.

Class dismissed :D

I can see where KU is coming from. I know it's all about money to the people making these deals, but we're setting a lot more aside than most Missouri fans want to admit.

I was at the KU game last weekend, and that kind of atmosphere is not worth giving up for some paycheck. It's just not like anything else you see in college sports, short of maybe the Duke/UNC rivalry. I was very disappointed to hear we were going to the SEC. Our rivalries not only with Kansas, but also with Oklahoma, Texas, and the others are all more than likely going to be gone now. And we'll be going into a conference that just isn't a good fit for Mizzou, geographically or otherwise. Do you think we have more in common with KU, Iowa State, and Oklahoma, or with Alabama, South Carolina, LSU, and Florida? Who is going to be our new conference rival? At least I love to hate KU. I can't even say that much about any SEC team. And with West Virginia and TCU coming in fill out the conference next year, I don't see the Big 12 ceasing to be a top-level conference anytime soon. So far they've been able to replace the schools that have left with programs of at least roughly equal and arguably better quality. Meanwhile, we'll be stuck in a soulless conference with no good rivals.

We should have stayed, I'm telling you.
