BackCastingGolfer Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I am really enjoying tying with these new things! I see these hanging from some fish lips soon!
Trout Commander Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I'm still not sold on these yet. For the extra money they cost over dumbbell eyes, what are the benefits on say those of the patterns above that are basically Clousers? I DO like the profiles of the Sculpin Helmets made by the same company. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. BackCastingGolfer Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 I haven't fished them yet, but what I like ist the profile I'm able to get over a clouser. I can put alot more material on the fly with these. They also aren't very heavy, which I also like.
timsfly Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I had some samples late last fall, tied em up and the table rock bass loved the blue head with blue/black body, then it turned a bit colder and I switched to trout, didn't really fish them a lot this winter, but I did catch two 10+ rainbows on a silver head with a chartreuse tail, I was fishing the small head. I think they will find their place on many a fly tiers bench, and the look good to, I still use barbell eyes, but I like the size and weight of the fish skulls. duckydoty Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I've been cranking them out lately. Been fishing them on Taney and doing real good. I started tying them for a pattern I use in Alaska, but thought I'd go ahead and try them on Taney. The have produced well during the day and at night. I am now tying them in white bass colors. They are expensive compared to dumbell eyes or coneheads, but I do really like them. One more note, Leonard and I have discovered that after heavy fishing the heads will pop off if you just glue them on. You need to go ahead and put another whip finish knot in front of the fish skull to keep it locked down on the hook. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Flysmallie Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I haven't fished them but I like the look.
Brian Wise Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I DO like the profiles of the Sculpin Helmets made by the same company. Sculpin Helmets scare me.....I am just waiting to hear about someone life ending by taking one of those to the head. I dig the Fish Skulls. Tied a bunch of Ice Picks with them--Great Success! duckydoty Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 To me, they are kinda like Frank's Hot Sauce...I'm putting that stuff on everything A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
Trout Commander Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 To me, they are kinda like Frank's Hot Sauce...I'm putting that stuff on everything What I am trying to figure out is why I should pay more for Franks when Tobasco flavors my food just as well. So far I've seen: shape - that's a valid reason. I like the baitfish head profile, Light weight - that's why god made alminum and plastic dumbbell eyes. I've also used my context clues to figure out that they are probably easier/quicker to tie on than dumbbells. You guys almost have me sold. A couple more valid reasons and you might hear my wallet creak open. Maybe. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.
