mic Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Don't know if you have fished any parks, but you will see a rush in the morning as people catch all the "stupid fish". The people in the park, at least the headwater section, will thin to empty after 9:00am as the "bite turns off". Here are three post rush approaches. 1. There are large rocks that line the bank at the spring. The spring pushes water into and through the rocks. Try floating a small fly (20 griffin's knat) into the rocks and currents going through them. You can't do it at kickoff because there will be to many people. However, it doesn't work well after the sun gets high. 2. If you have a micro reel setup and can cast a weighted woolly, try this one after the morning crowd leaves the big hole below the handicap ramp and above the rock darn. Wade out and cast a woolly out into the deep hole. Let it get to the bottom and very slowly bounce it through the hole. It works best to keep the line as tight as possible while the woolly drops naturally. You have to watch for any bump of line and feel for dead weight. This one works all day. I've been the only guy catching fish sometimes using this approach. 3. The last one is in the riffles below the rock bridge in zone II. I can't seem to find a pattern for it, but it works often. Stand above the riffle and cast your favorite worm fly quarter stream and let it swing below you. Then slowly retrieve the fly all the way up to you. Work your way across the stream. Try to work your line through as many eddies as you can. Everything you read says this approach shouldn't work because you are lining the fish and it is going against the current. The only thing I can think of is the fly gets pulled into eddies and spins around. When it works its great, when it doesn't it doesn't. So you should be able to figure it out in 10 or 15 minutes. Don't forget to post your reports. There is wireless in the restaurant. Good Luck MIC
DoveTail Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 The water could be clear. The fish there see a LOT of flies and can be picky, so you probably do not want to use larger than 7x tippet. I would use flurocarbon. Some use different brands of flurocarbon. So if you aren't catching them on one brand...switch to the other. The middle of the week is less crowded, so always a good time to go. Small flies work better that time of the year. I would recommend stopping by Larry's Fly Shop as they know what will be working well when you are there. There are fish all over the place. I think as with anything in hunting or fishing, if you fish an area where you don't see as many people, the fish are not as disturbed. They are wild even though people crawl all over them in the park. Wet flies will produce a more especially early in the year. It is always fun to catch them on some dries.
Members shootermedic816 Posted August 6, 2012 Author Members Posted August 6, 2012 Well guys I still haven't made it down to Bennett yet this year. But I did go out west to Estes Park Colorado last week and caught my first fish on a fly! It was an 11" Brown that I caught on a Jujubee Midge #20, I was fishing the Big Thompson River! I am definitely HOOKED on fly fishing! Pun intended!!! Hopefully this heat will break soon and I can get down to Bennett! -Jonathan AKA ShooterMedic816
