packersooner Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Got out on the lake at about 830 am and the wind drove us off by noon. Just couldn't find a place to hide. We managed 6 keeper crappie and probably a dozen or so shorts. All of them came in 25-30 fow on a ledge with brush. Most of the keepers were caught when a school of shad would move through just above brush level. The shallower pods of shad would only produce small crappie. Anywho, a couple of questions for those of you that fish Pomme frequently... 1) Does the Bolivar boat ramp have a courtesy dock directly next to one of the boat ramp lanes? 2) Looking at past fishing reports, it seems that a lot of anglers fish the bluffs for crappie. Would anyone mind sharing how they go about fishing this type of pattern? Are you keying in on brush piles, trolling until you find them, etc.? Jason
Members AlaskaGrown Posted March 4, 2012 Members Posted March 4, 2012 I fish Pomme quite frequently, but I don't have a boat (nor access to one) so everything I do is from the bank. I didn't go today because with a westerly or northerly wind it is sometimes not worth it for me to get up to the lake (too difficult to cast from the shore i fish). I am not certain, but I don't think the bolivar landing has a dock near the boat ramp lanes. Someone else might have a more "for sure" answer though.
Members fisherman wannabe Posted March 4, 2012 Members Posted March 4, 2012 Bolivar landing use to have a boat dock near the ramp. I have not been there in a couple of years.
MOPanfisher Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Yes Bolivar landing has a courtesy dock, on the right side if you are looking down the ramp. Generally when fishing for crappie this time of year we target the brushpiles in 15-25 FOW, will hit them at various depths until we find fish. Sometimes the fish are right on top of the brush sometimes inside it. Sometimes you have to change piles to get better fish. Won't be long until they will start moving toward the shallower piles in a pre-spawn pattern. I say not long, but generally late march early april on Pomme. A little later than on other lakes for some reason.
packersooner Posted March 9, 2012 Author Posted March 9, 2012 Thanks for the responses everyone. It's just tough to do a one man launch without a courtesy dock next to the ramp...unless you drag your boat back up on shore so you can park the truck. Thanks for the info on the crappie MOPanfisher. Your take has been spot on the few times I have fished Pomme. Jason
