10pointer
so like the title says, who's heading down for the annual classic? I cant wait its one of the best times to go all year with all the neat stuff and atmosphere. just got home from the MTFA tournament, I caught a 7 lb. 6 oz. rainbow, and I also caught 3 tagged fish. Had alot of fun and I know some people have something against the MTFA on here, so please noone jump my case Had a great time though, even though they went to the orange antennae looking tags near the dorsal fin. Id definitely like to see that changed back to at least a different color besides hunter orange, if they cant go back to the metal clips. Any joeblow could walk down the stream in the morning without polarized glasses and see and cast at every tagged fish around. It really aggravated me because finding tagged fish in the afternoons was super hard. I lost two tagged ones at the net to breakoffs on 1 lb, but i had a great trip catching the 3 and that big lunker! Now i cant wait till the holland, it should be fun! Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 18, 2006 Root Admin Share Posted September 18, 2006 Explain alittle... what is MTFA? And what happens when you catch a tagged trout? Did you win anything with the 7-6 rainbow?
Kicknbass
phil, I think that is the Missouri (or Montauk) trout fishing Assosiation. There were post on this tournement earlier this year. I wasn't there, just remember the earlier post. " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
rainbow
Its the Missouri Trout Fishing Association and they had their annual tournament. You get prizes for catching tagged fish same as in the Holland tourney. I am headed there Friday for the weekend so any advice would be helpful on flies, jigs and tippets. Wanted to come to Taney but Lilley's is full. Maybe next time.
10pointer
i ended up getting 3 chuck witcher prints including a ltd edition color 92/200 of the 1995 trout stamp print. Its absolutely beautiful, and im getting it framed like all the others i have of his prints already, i believe im missing only one now. It came with number 92 trout stamp too so it will make a nice framed set. The holland is a great tournament which raises alot of money for the heart association, but its crowded down there for sure. Its the "Missouri Trout Fisherman's Association". Theres a KC, Springfield, and the St. Louis chapter. Some have things against it but it just a good time to get new people into the sport of trout and flyfishing. And a note, the only place id keep a lunker would be inside the parks. I would never keep one at taney or outside the parks. I just thought id throw that out there
3wt
I was there for the weekend. Pretty much the 2nd worst time I've ever been to Montauk-second only to a flash flooding weekend. I'm glad people have fun, but wow, talk about too many people on the stream. And isn't a trout tournament like trying to get champagne from McDonalds? They just don't go together. Really though, I'm glad they raise money and I'm glad people have a good time. I just wish they would do a better job advertising for those of us who don't want to end up competing with the meat-hunt. Just a thought.
10pointer
trout tournaments arent really complicated and hard, its just set up for fun, unlike say a bass tournament. If you didnt like the amount of people at the mtfa then you would really hate the holland tournament. Were talkin 1500-3000 people in the park, if you want to go to get some peace and be the only one on the stream then this isnt the weekend for you to go down. Im one to like some peace and serenity but i like to go down for the 3 tourny's and opening day every year, it just spices up the year a little more for me Its really like tradition for me, and you cant tell me anybody goes to opening day for something other than tradition! The holland usually raises between 7k and 10k for the heart association. The derby fee is only a couple bucks a person so alot of others besides me must make other monetary contributions to the cause while down there. There's live bands, a car show, and craft fair things etc. that go on all weekend for those that didnt know. I really like the atmosphere and the comroderie of the tournament. I could care less if i caught many fish during the weekend, its just being down there thats the fun part for me. if you check the missouritrout.com website it will tell you the list of events at all the parks.
