Jay Melkus of Topeka, who is an on-call nurse for Grace Hospice, boated what may be the new Kansas record rainbow trout. Melkus and Steve Dawdy of Topeka were fishing Lake Shawnee during the evening of Mar. 7.

Congrats to Jay, a good looking fish for sure. I am surprised that kansas grows them that large. It is quite a thrill to land a record fish.

That lake has a good number of holdover fish each year. It is possible that fish was just stocked last week, but it is also possible that is a holdover from last year.

Kansas has trout?

Only in the winter and if you know the summer springs at Lake Shawnee and in Cherokee County, Mined Lands Wildlife Area #30.

This is funny. I asked this same question about 2 years ago, and Drew was quick to inform me that indeed they do.
