Members MST SigEp Posted March 14, 2012 Members Posted March 14, 2012 Hey all, Has anyone on here ever fished at Pony Express Lake in the North West of MO. MDC shows stocking of muskie up until nearly 10 years ago. I was curious if anyone has ever specifically targeted muskie there with any luck. I currently live in KC so I'm trying to find the closest muskie trip. I haven't ever targeted muskie but would definately love giving it a try. I hear Pom de Terre is excellent muskie fishing but was hoping to find some a little closer to home. let me know if you have any information that might help! PM me if you like.
Members MST SigEp Posted March 17, 2012 Author Members Posted March 17, 2012 Ah come on, ha ha. So regardless of where I go to fish mukie, does anyone have any tips that might help me be productive. I understand that it might take multiple trips but anything will help! Thanks again.
fishinwrench Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 All I can tell ya is that when guys in Missouri get really serious about catching Muskie they eventually head North. You could probably save yourself alot of time and gas money in the end by heading to REAL Muskie country right off the bat.
timinmo Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 have you checked milage? Not trying to be dilfficult but surely pomme is not as far from Rolla as Pony Expresss. If you are going from Fulton have you tried Hazel Creek near Kirksville. My brother who lives in Columbia and usually fishes out of a canoe has made a couple of trips to Hazel Creek to try to catch a muskie. As of this time I don't think my brother has caught any but it is anotheroption for you and it is a electric only lake I believe .
MoSportsmen Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Yes it is electric only, I do not know what the last stocking was of Muskie was in Hazel, but it used to be quite good for them. I have one Keeper photo on the wall when the limit was 42 inches. Seems like I have heard less and less about the Muskie in HC in recent years. So I do not know what the status is right now. Spring time I have has some luck throwing lip less cranks (rattle trap) in normal bass size. Latter on Shad raps work well. Trolling or casting around the mouths of timber coves, dam can be good with the rattle trap in the spring. At one time the catch rate on Muskie at HC was as good as any lake in "real" Muskie waters up north. Don't know what it is like now. Bass population is on an upswing and it has always been one of the best bet lakes for lunker largemouth. Messing about in boats
