Members Jeff_L Posted March 20, 2012 Members Posted March 20, 2012 First post. I have a group that will be doing a 2 day float in early June, probably Cane Bluff - Riverton. We would like to camp on a gravel bar (not an organized campground) somewhere below Greer / Highway 19. We will probably stash a car at Greer Access to grab some gear. Any ideas for a good campsight would be great, thanks. I'm sure I will have more questions as we get closer to our trip.
BruteFish83 Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 The confluence of Hurricane Creek along with Turner's Mill are good spots to camp. http://www.youtube.com/user/BruteFish83/videos
Brian Sloss Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 River right just below the 3rd island past Greer boat ramp has a good spot, then there is another spot river right at the end of the shoal just past the 4th island, then River right where Little Hurricane enters or river left across from the creek at the head of the shoal is another. Also, the 1st island below Greer, if you go around the left side there is a spot on river left before you enter stair step hole. If you have a small group, there are plenty of other places as well that you will see if you are paying attention. Also, pay attention to the islands as a lot of people miss the 2nd island as it is tiny. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Brian Sloss Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Looking back on your original question, all the places I listed are probably not far enough downstream for a 2 day float. I would get down to stinking pond just below Turner. Before Turner there is a good gravel bar on river right just past Mary Decker shoals and past Hurricane Creek, not to be confused with Little Hurricane. Don't be afraid of float camps past Turner, as most are not accessible by road. Gps way points are on our web site at www.11pointcanoe.com for the float camps. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
snap Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Brian is right with his 2nd post......You would best be served to camp near Turner as that would be near the half way point of this float. I might add that if you are planning on fishing much, that would be a real tough float since you would be floating nearly 12 miles a day. Just a thought!!!!
Members Jeff_L Posted March 21, 2012 Author Members Posted March 21, 2012 Very helpful, thanks. We will have a fairly large group, around 20, with a mix of fishing enthusiasm/skill. Several of us will want to fish quite a bit, many/most will just be enjoying the scenery. We've done Upper Jacks (30+ miles) and Upper Buffalo the last two years and our experience has been that first day we are pretty slow; more fishing and general goofing off and second day we make much better time; that's why we figured we would do less than half the first day. We also probably won't get on the river until later on the first day. It is also my understanding that the jet boats get thicker the lower you go, so figured if we were going to take our time, higher is better. It would be nice to be able to stop and refresh the coolers and grab gear at Greer and then float a couple miles in the trophy trout area and camp somewhere we could continue to hit the bows that afternoon/evening. It sounds like the float camp above Turner and just past Hurricane Creek might be ideal. Are there any other good gravel bars before that? Thank you all for your help.
Brian Sloss Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 If you are going during the week, jet boat traffic will be light. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Gavin Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Cane to Little Hurricane would make a good day one float...I havent been down recently...but it was the biggest gravel bar on the Greer to Turner stretch last fall...Here's a pic of the spot.
Members Jeff_L Posted March 21, 2012 Author Members Posted March 21, 2012 Fantastic, thanks. We will be floating Friday/Saturday, so figuring lots of boat traffic on the float down to Riverton on Saturday. I assume the rainbow fishing across from Little Hurricane is still solid, what is that, 3 miles or so below Greer?
Gavin Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 The fishing is good in that area. The the fishing usually doesnt slow down until you get past big Hurricane.
