duckydoty Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Was gonna fish the James early this morning and after reading all the USGS guages, I headed out the door at 6:20 a.m. I did not even get to the end of the road when a buddy called and asked if I wanted to go fishing. I turned the truck around, met up with Ryan, and we were fishing by 8 a.m. Again, we put in across from Cape Fair Marina and headed to a spot for crappie. As we were pulling up to the spot, we notice some activity on the surface 15 feet or so from the bank. I started chucking the fly rod at the feeding fish and Ryan was throwing a rooster tail. We both caught several short bass and a couple that were in the 2 pound range. After getting bored with the bass, we proceeded into the cove to get on some crappie. First pole timber we pulled up to gave up 2 keeper slabs. We fished every other bit of structure in that small cove and did not catch another. As we were motoring out of the cove we noticed boils everywhere on the main lake around the point 14 area. These boils were from one side of the lake to the other. I again picked up the fly rod and first cast was another short bass. Next cast was a blue gill....now this was in 72 feet of water and I was stripping a minnow fly just as fast as I could strip it. Ryan picked up two nice bass and then we started getting white bass. Big sows in the 2 to 3 pound range and they were exploding all around us. Ryan was throwing a top water red fin and I was getting out fished 3 to 1 on the fly rod. This activity lasted about 30 minutes and we both caught large mouth, spots, whites and blue gill, then they were gone. We continued our hunt for crappie and managed a few more before deciding we were wet enough to quit. The Whites being out in the lake around point 14 gives hope that the run will still happen after the flood waters on the James go down. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!!
