Wayne SW/MO Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 It can depend on what you intend to fish for, but in Missouri an expensive reel with a first class drag isn't necessary. You can easily stay around a $100, or much less, and get a good reel. Cabelas and BPS have them, Echo has one that you might look at. I have a couple of the Cabela reels and haven't found any problwms with them. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
stlfisher Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I have had good luck with the Cabela's RLS reels for my 5 weight.
dpenrod Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 i'll second the recommendation for the lamson konic. great reel for the money and the drag is more than you will ever need around here. i have the 2 on my 5wt. check the classified forums here as well as other fly fishing sites and you can usually find them used at very reasonable prices. one of the best and most active classified forums is at washingtonflyfishing.com. check there and flyanglersonline.com. between here and those two, you can always find a bargain.
3wt Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Step one: count your money Step two: buy fanciest reel with coolest design that is just at or barely below money from step one. This actually works for all fly fishing gear purchases.

3wt Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I will second that. I am always lucky on the creek right after a new purchase of fly fishing gear. It is good luck to buy something new. And more money more luck. This is the accepted theory as to why fly fishing gear is so expensive. Also the fish give credit for best costume, which explains the creation of fly vests and goofy fly fishing hats.

Feathers and Fins Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I like pretty reels and functional reels. Abel,, Sage, Orvis are all proven time tested reels. Then I like the drool factor of pretty http://www.abelreels.com/finishes.html Then I tell my wife I love her lots and buy her pretty sparkly jewelry so she doesnt notice the pretty reels and ask how much it cost. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Members stlskyline Posted May 19, 2012 Author Members Posted May 19, 2012 I ended up getting a Galvan Torque/T6 from t. Hargroves. I liked the drag system on my other ones. Put S. Angler wf5f line on. It sure does handle well on the new Sage One 590-4. It's already put a hurtin on dozens of fish at Montauk(not to mention wallet). it only took 1.5 years to save a little here and there on gift certs.
