Members sixstring531 Posted April 18, 2012 Members Posted April 18, 2012 I posted a request a few days ago for a good place to put in and fish the pea-gravel for our trip yesterday. A few members spoke up and mentioned a few areas in the general vicinity of where we put in. (Mutton Creek) Well, a great big thanks to Zarraspook and StrawHat for their suggestions! My father and I landed approximately 70 largemouth, lost at least a dozen more and at least 70% were 14-17" long. Nothing huge (largest was nearing 3lb, but not quite in my guestimation) but all really fun fish to catch. It was a beautiful day. All I can say is pea-gravel 45 degree banks is where it was at yesterday. We'd fish banks with transitions from chunk rock to pea-gravel and would start catching as soon as we hit the gravel. The male's tails weren't messed up yet, but they were definitely in some stage of a spawning pattern. Here is a quick run down of what we used: (I believe all were 3/8th oz) Zoom Trick Worm (watermelon red) on football jig (had the screw on the head to put the worm on -- shaky head style) and regular shaky head jig Black and Blue jig and pig with NetBait Paca Craw trailer Chompers skirted grub Senko (Chompers and Gary Bower brand) Again, thanks forum members for the suggestions. On a side note, we got to meet member ZarraSpook out on the water - nice guy!
zarraspook Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 I only caught 13 bass... so as the saying goes "nice guys finish last" (LOL).. I tried so many different lures, it looked like Bass Pro Shop exploded on the front of my boat... I caught a couple on a spinnerbait, a couple on a crankbait, a couple on a 6" lizzard, but the biggest two came on "OLD FAITHFUL" - zarraspook!!!!!! Was good talking with sixstring and his dad... They both were "kicking bass" when I caught up with them and it was obvious they only need a place to start.... "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"

straw hat Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 sixstring531, I am so glad you guys had such a good trip! When people drive all that way to fish a lake I sure do like to see them have a good time. Good job!!!
Members Dollar Bill Posted April 19, 2012 Members Posted April 19, 2012 Wow! What a great trip... I'm happy for you guys. I used to fish with my father and then my father in law a lot. They're gone now but the memories are still strong. Go every chance you get. That area between chicken rock and Springfield cove is some of my favorite water on the whole lake. Not many smallmouth there but it's got everything else. Thanks for sharing. bill Is this fun or what!
Members Ferrett Posted April 19, 2012 Members Posted April 19, 2012 Sixstring Sounds like a great, great trip!!!! I never fished the Mutton Creek side but plan to try next week. Can you get me some help where you & your fished? Ferrett
Members sixstring531 Posted April 19, 2012 Author Members Posted April 19, 2012 Ferret - I sent you some specifics in an email. I laid out what we used in my first post, though I think most anything intruding on their nesting grounds will solicit a strike.
