I don't care that much about the length of the worm as I do the diameter. I like a gap that is at least twice the diameter of the worm I'm using so that I can go through it even when it is doubled. If you buy hooks from a display look at the gap and the wire diameter and pick the appropiate size. Brands vary enough that the size is not always that useful.
