ruthead Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Got a chance to go crappie fishin in about 3 hours. Would like to try my flyrod but need to know what flies to try for crappie. Got lots of dry's, nymphs, scuds etc but didn't know what to try. can someone help quick? "Pretty soon we may not have any rights left because it might infringe on someone's rights"
laker67 Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I use 1/80 oz maribou jigs like you buy at the trout parks. Hook gap is the important thing to look for. Buy the ones with the largest hook and hook gap. You will catch fish. Anything with a little flashabo added is the best. Give us a report.
Chris Barclay Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I tend to catch crappie on size 12ish red/white slow sinking spiders. If you are familiar with them the Bluegill Bully Spider works well in whites, reds or yellows. Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
ruthead Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 no time to run to get anything. Was wondering if a crackleback stripped would work. got muddler minnows, wollies but not really in the bright typical crappie colors. Beetles, ants and typical dry flies. ruthead Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 Got leeches also. Don't have any maribou jigs. "Pretty soon we may not have any rights left because it might infringe on someone's rights"
FlyFishinFool Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 If it is not to late to answer - if you have to use whatever you have on hand, make it light or white in color, and then clamp a small split shot a foot or so above the fly. I have caught crappie on chartreuse cracklebacks before - if you have some time, tie a little bit of anything white (yarn, etc) onto the hook end of the crackleback. However, the earlier answers were correct - the best things to use are the little maribou jigs in white with some flashaboo, or a very small clouser in white/red/light. * ´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> `•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((º> .¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."
