JCWolfe Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 I knew you were joking. I had a big silver flash go by me once, it was fast and close, scared the **** out of me. Okiemountaineer
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 There r some serious pigs in there. Last year, our Striper season was shot with the floods because the holes that they would hold in and the flats they would feed on...all changed on us! But the previous years on the LIR, treated us pretty well... Oh well...we will find them again! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... dgames Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Were you getting the stripers during the day or did you have to be there at first light to get them?
dgames Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 I fished today. Got there a few minutes after 7am and started at the lower end of the island. Water was initially dead low. Had to work pretty hard for them. They started off hitting my usual yellow/olive midge, but they turned off of that after about 8 or 10 fish. About 8am, the blew the horn and as it turned out, they must have turned on the sluice gates, because when the water arrived, it was really nice flow. Switched to several things and started getting some hits on a brownish gold, bh wooly bugger. Caught 7 or 8 on that and had a bunch of ldr's and 2 or 3 breakoffs. After a while, they turned off of that and I switched back to the midge. Got a few more on the midge. A little after 11, I got driven off the water by thunderstorms and headed back to Tulsa.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Early mornings were the norm for us. Soon as the sun would hit the water, the bite would turn off. I firmly believe they feed at night and into the early morning. Then just lay up all day. I could be wrong though. I did catch a striper during the middle of the day once, he was a little guy about 7" long. He didn't know any better. I was trout fishing. Okiemountaineer
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Yeah I have caught a ton of the baby stripers down there. They will make ur heart stop because they eat a fly just like their larger siblings so u never know. We haven't been out this year for stripers, busy chasing trout and smallies! I had a really slow day as well. I got to Watts about 8:30, but didn't get fishing till about 9-9:30 because of some tipper problems. The water was exceptionally clear there as well, and it was also barely moving until they let some water out. Unfortunately, I brought no fish to hand, I had 5 or 6 but they all broke off. I don't know if the trout were rising up at the island but they definitely were smashing something on the surface, but I couldn't tell what it was. Usually when I go to the LIR I see people catching trout like every other cast, that's not how it was Saturday. It was a very slow morning. - Nick
Nick Williams Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 I am curious though, for those of you who have targeted stripers what are you using to catch them? And when you guys were actually targeting them did you fish up by Marval and above or below Marval? - Nick
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Ur typical baitfish patterns like clousers and deceivers will work. I use an 8wt with a sink tip line. As far as where to fish, they are everywhere up and down the river. Just gotta put in the time to find them.
