txspecks04 Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 I am in the market for a couple of PFD's; one for me and one for my wife as we are planning to spend as much time as possible on the water in our kayaks this summer. My main criteria are as follows: Safety Range of motion Cost Breathability/staying cool As with anything else, I am sure there are many different opinions out there...so let's hear 'em! Thanks tx
moguy1973 Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 I have a Stohlquist Fisherman kayaking life vest. It's not the cheapest, but it's got nice storage and a high back so it doesn't interfere with the back of the kayak's seat. It's very comfortable, and has nice range of motion...Other than it being a little warm on hot days (but most PFD's will be), I hardly know I have it on when I'm in the kayak... http://www.stohlquis...id=32&Itemid=64 Stohlquist makes a number of other kayaking vests that don't have the fishing storage like that one does too, and they are less pricey...I think mine was right around on sale $85 shipped... I bought my wife a Stohlquist GetAway female version for just under $50 and she likes it... Price shouldn't really be a concern though on something that is going to save your life IMO... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 I've used Extrasports for a long time for paddling, including white water, and they are top rate. There are some good looking vest with the fishermen in mind out there and while not cheap they'll probably last. I would advise you plan on spending $75+ and stay with the top brands, they'll be worth it in the long run. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
txspecks04 Posted May 5, 2012 Author Posted May 5, 2012 Thanks for the info guys, I'll be looking into those for sure.
UnCivE Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I like my Stohlquist fisherman. I store my pliers and scissors in em, and it gives me a spot for my license and phone. Good for visibility (in mango orange) and peace of mind.
Stoneroller Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I also have the Stohlquist fisherman vest. I got the universal fit ones, which have a ton of adjustment and can be made to fit just about anybody with just about any amount of clothing. admittedly I do not wear it much when it's hot out, but I also don't kayak much where I can't swim to shore or stand up in water. (which means nothing if I were to get knocked out or have a health issue that caused me to become unconscious or immobile) Fish On Kayak Adventures, LLC.
