Bassmaster21 Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Went out last saturday morning and fished under every single tree tossing road runners up under them. Only had two crappie and a catfish to show for it. I love topwater fishing (dont we all) and was wondering if anybody think a bass would even consider biting a buzz bait now? Let alone it being an effective way to catch fish. Thanks for any advice. God Bless.
Members usmcgrunt Posted May 11, 2012 Members Posted May 11, 2012 I've been throwing a popper during the first hour of daylight and right after dark and I've been doing ok on bass. They average about 14 inches. But the bite isn't very hot yet, during the time I throw it, I'll only have 3 or 4 fish to show for it. I've been doing much better on texas rigged worms, wacky rigged senkos, and white swimbaits and flukes.
Bassmaster21 Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 Well I went out again and had mo luck on top. Did switch to some crank baits and man the bass fought hard. I had some I though would be keepers (above 15) and they were keepers but less than 12 haha. It was crazy but a lot of fun
Patrick M Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 where were you finishing? what cranks were you using? i am planning a trip tomorrow.
Members usmcgrunt Posted May 14, 2012 Members Posted May 14, 2012 I went out again yesterday and threw a few crankbaits and caught one 16 inch largemouth on a white shallow running crank, and I lost a bigger one on a craw pattern crank. The fish were very picky, but the highlight of the day was the 18 inch smallmouth I caught on a 4 inch white swimbait. I'll be out again tomorrow and I'll try to update when I get done.
Patrick M Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 usmcgrunt when will you be out tomorrow? i plan on going to. if you see a 14 ft aluminum boat with a briggs outboard wave me down and say hello
Bassmaster21 Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 Thats an awesome smallmouth! I was using a gold and orange Hot n' Tot. Thats the only crank I used the whole time. Im heading back early tomorrow so ill see if I have any better luck.
Members usmcgrunt Posted May 17, 2012 Members Posted May 17, 2012 Well Tuesday wasn't as good of a catching day as I had hoped. I only landed 2 largemouth, and they weren't exactly brag worthy, only about 10 inches each. I would have had more, but my line chose a great time to start being unreliable and broke off on 2 fish I believe would have been pushing 3 pounds. Well one of them anyway. The other wasn't on the line long enough for me to get a feel for his size. So after I replace my line, I'll be back out there Saturday morning before I have to go to work. Patrick, if you ever want a fishing partner, just let me know and I'll pitch in for gas and conversation on the water.
Patrick M Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 usmc sometime we will need to. we will just meet at the ramp. im off tuesday and wednesdays. i dont know when i will be back out. ive been using the same gas since like september last yr and ive went 7 or 8 times on it. my motor doesnt use much and its a 3 gallon tank.
Members usmcgrunt Posted May 19, 2012 Members Posted May 19, 2012 That actually works perfect. I'm off tuesdays and wednesdays too. And the fishing fanatic that I am, I went out again this morning and right before the sun came up, I hooked into a fat 20 inch largemouth on a popper on the first cast of the day. But that was the only fish of the day. Oh well, I'll catch more later.
