Members Jeff_L Posted May 17, 2012 Members Posted May 17, 2012 I have a group headed down the weekend of June 9, planning on putting in at Cane Bluff. I know it has been pretty dry down there, is anyone even putting that far up? Talked to Buffalo River concessionaires (headed down there next weekend) and they are all shutting down, no water on the Upper Buffalo at all. What is the highest spot that we can reasonably put in if no rain between now and our trip? Thanks!
Gavin Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Greer Spring is pumping out 390 cfs...so it should be good from Greer Access on down.
Members Jeff_L Posted May 17, 2012 Author Members Posted May 17, 2012 yeah, I know after Greer it is good year round. We are (or were, at least) planning on putting in above Greer for a 2 day float. I know that section is more rainfall dependant, and unfortunately doesn't have a USGS gauge, so no way to tell from where I am what it is looking like.
Greasy B Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Current water levels are about what you would see in July or August. Years ago I floated Cane Bluff to Greer in an aluminum canoe in dead low water, way way too much work. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974
Gavin Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Greer is flowing 380..and its flowing 540cfs 19 miles downstream at Riverton . There are 3-4 creeks and several springs between Greer and Riverton...Do a rain dance if you want to float from Cane Bluff in 3-4 weeks. Call up Eleven Point Canoe rental..they will know. Have fun!
Brian Sloss Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Cane Bluff to Greer is ok, but it is low. If you are not too loaded down with gear, it is not too bad. Had some kayaks do it today and said they only had to get out a few times, but the water between shoals was really slow. With lots of gear it may get troublesome in spots. Thomasville to Cane Bluff would not be a good idea, especially in the first 3 miles or so. A lot of pulling your canoe through shoals. The water from Greer downstream is good for floating though and will be even if the drought continues well into the summer. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Brian Sloss Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 smallmouth fishing on the upper river has been ok. Trout in blue ribbon has been quality over quantity and they have been stocking the white ribbon area so that has been good. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
