Outboard Motor Question

I've got a 2004 40 hp two stroke Johnson and it runs great but it does do one thing I've wondered about.

After the motor is warm most of the time when I start it , it starts right up. Sometimes though I have to key it 2-3 times to get it to start. If it still won't start I have to advance the idle lever and it starts right up. Other than that, the motor runs great, idles smooth.

I've always figured this is fairly common with two strokes but thought I'd ask.

It's only "common" when there is an issue allowing it to act like that. It is probably a slight leak in the (cracked) primer valve.

Next time it fails to fire right up, give the fuel bulb a squeeze.....if it starts right up after that then it is either a carb float level setting issue, or a leaking primer valve (red pointy thing on the starboard side) that is affecting fuel pressure when at an idle, or at cranking speed.

You might also take a look at the throttle cam roller to see if it is still all there, it is a two piece roller they have a habit of falling apart.
