Members justincarf Posted July 31, 2012 Author Members Posted July 31, 2012 Late post. Thought I would give you a report on my float trip July 12 - 15. We ended up floating Cedar Grove to Round Spring. The weather was beautiful all 4 days. The fishing was great for my friend who doesn't fly fish, and was using a spinning set up with a small jointed rapala. He was catching fish left and right. The smallies were loving the lure he was using. He even caught 2 smallies on the same lure...at the same time! It was pretty awesome to witness. He even caught his first trout, and missed 2 others. For me, I started off using flies I've never used before...such as prince nymphs, hares ears, and elk hair caddis. (I fish for bass.) I probably wasn't using the proper technique with these flies, but I'm sure with practice, and time I will get better. I wasn't attracting anything. So, after playing around with those flies, I decided to go to my old faithful...a wooly bugger. I tied on a white wooly bugger, and the fish started hitting. Large mouth, small mouth, and I finally caught my first rainbow trout! It was very exciting. At first I didn't know what I had hooked in to, as it got closer I saw that it was a trout. I jumped out of the canoe and landed it. I ended up catching 3 rainbow's the entire trip. 2 of them came about 1/4 a mile after the akers ferry landing. All fish were caught, and released. All in all it was a great trip. Caught a lot of fish, including our first trout. We saw more animal activity than we have in past trips...weasals, river otters, snapping turtles, snakes (corn snake and a water moccasin), and we even had a guy ride past our camp site on horseback. (He was going fishing.) The river otters were hilarious. There were 5 of them swimming and fussing around these rocks on the shore...I had my camera out ready to take a picture not paying full attention to them...well, 2 of them decided to check us out...They popped their heads out of the water right next to us in our canoe, and scared the hell out of me. hahaha I dropped the camera in the canoe, and didn't get a picture of them. It was hilarious. I could have put my hand on one of their heads they were so close. Okay that is all Here's a link to the full album of my trip if you would like to see. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Carf/Current%20River%202012/ My first trout My second Trout underwater My second trout underwater swimming away My best friend with an awesome Smallie A nice large mouth I caught www.thebarblessangler.com
Members go4ducks2 Posted July 31, 2012 Members Posted July 31, 2012 Looks like you guys had a blast, nice report and some great pics. If you ever want to do a two day one night weekend trip from Baptist to Akers, hit me up. Me and my buddy have personal pontoons...maybe we could get some more guys from here to go. We float Baptist to Cedar quite a bit cause we trout fish, but I've been wanting to go on past Cedar. We've caught some nice smallies down around Parker. Most are in the deep holes after a nice riffle.
Justin Spencer Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Congrats on your first trout justin, sounds like you had a great time, I feel the enthusiasm coming through in your post, and that reminds me of how lucky I am to live where I do. Gavin Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 The smile on your face is priceless....Glad you had a great time.
Addicted to Creeks Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 congrats on a great trip. Be careful though. Catch enough of those trout and those bass bugs will turn into midges before you know it Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner

I'd be there all the time haha! Congrats on your first trout justin, sounds like you had a great time, I feel the enthusiasm coming through in your post, and that reminds me of how lucky I am to live where I do. Thank you! I am envious that you live down there, and don't have the long drive that I do. I wish the rivers, and forests up here by me looked half as good as the riverways by down there. The smile on your face is priceless....Glad you had a great time. Thank you, Gavin! I still smile when I see that picture. I was pretty excited that Orvis chose my picture to repost and share for their picture of the day one day on their facebook page. congrats on a great trip. Be careful though. Catch enough of those trout and those bass bugs will turn into midges before you know it Hahaha I'll have to learn how to use those midges first. All my luck with those 3 trout have been on a white wooly bugger. I use those up here, too. I catch mixed bag of fish with it LMB, Smallies, Crappie, and other Pan fish. It produces extremely well for me. This fall I am going to try my luck when the steelhead run in wisconsin. Hopefully, I catch my first steelhead this year, too! www.thebarblessangler.com
