JohnP Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 Thanks again Wrench for returning my call last night, it was good talking to you and giving me a better understanding of what I was looking at. I do believe that the hard plastic tube is from the water intake vent cover that must of broke off after looking at it, just thankful that it didn't completely block of the water flow and hopefully didn't do any damage to the motor itself.
JohnP Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 Wrench, just double checking, I'm expecting the upper seals to be in this afternoon, if I remember right you said that the open (spring) ends face away from each other (up and down)? Is that correct? Thanks again for the help.
fishinwrench Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Yep. I know it's a bit confusing because most come from the factory in a "2 lips up" position, but for freshwater use "back to back" is the way to go. Use a little gasket sealer if the seals don't have the red or yellow coated brass/aluminum, and fill the void between the seal lips with grease before seating the pump base. The single "lip up" shift shaft seal acts as an excess pressure vent so all other seals (propshaft and driveshaft) can go back to back.
JohnP Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 Thanks and also if I remember right the upper seal of the two gets seated as far up into the housing it can go and the lower one is flush with the bottom of the housing or did I misunderstand that?
