Iclass Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I agree. Was just saying sometimes old "wives tales" have no scientific support. Some of the home remedies that my grandparents have told me they did when they were young were just insane. I remember my grandfather he told me that he had the top of his foot peeled back when he got it smashed in between a loading dock and a truck and he said his parents slathered bacon grease in the wound. I can't imagine that being good. Just one of many examples that make no sense. On a fishing related note I have also heard that if the cows in the pasture are laying down during the day the fish aren't biting....not sure if that one is true or not. Would save me a lot of time if the cows could be a determining factor as to weather to stay home or get out on the water. Being a biologist....I have to say that there a way more ol' timers tales (that have little to no scientific proof) that do work, than not. Strange thing is that many "wifes tales" work all over the world, some are regional. And yes Wayne there are exceptions to EVERY rule...well except for gravity. I had a farmer in NE TX tell me about cows laying down, fish dont bite and deer dont move. There is MUCH science to prove this theory based on Lunar cycles. But there are exceptions to this rule as well, see weather pattern now. Same farmer told me fish wont bite when its raining, the rain drops scare the fish....I think we all know this isnt true. I have seen soap outfish live bait for catfish in the Deltas of AR and MS, cant find any science to support why, but have witnessed it first hand. To me, this is why fishing is such a great sport....You get to go out and test your own theories, and compare them to what the magazines tell you and what the ol' timers tell you. One thing I will always remember.... The ol' timers were fishing to provide food for their family, most of us just fish for enjoyment. Seems they learned a few tricks out of necessity, not just for fun. If more of us youngsters would just sit down and shut up....those ol' timers would teach us a thing or two. EXPERIENCE is the greatest teacher.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I have seen soap outfish live bait for catfish Yup, P&G worked great. I realize not all things pan out, anise for one, but over a lot of decades good sized Flats That I've caught or heard of came off of live bait with very few exceptions. I don't think any flat would be considered a reasonable size below 10# or so. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Members tunchi Posted July 2, 2012 Members Posted July 2, 2012 I caught a 40# flat on a power worm, in a bass tournament on Lake Fork, TX several years ago (when I lived there). I kept it tied to the side of my boat. When it was time for weigh in it went water skiing with me. I won the bass tourney and had some nice catfish steaks to boot. Becky B
