moguy1973 Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 If people in St Louis want to catch some gar this way, they need to go out to the lake behind Creve Couer Park (I think it's called Mallard Lake)...There are so many gar in there it wouldn't be hard to hook up with a lot of them using the rope method... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Brian Wise Posted August 3, 2012 Author Posted August 3, 2012 That's awesome! Gar are a highly underrated species to fish for. We've caught them on the Black River using spinning gear with wire leaders and big dead minnows. We would tie a strip of pantyhose (a little longer than the leader) to the top of the leader so it would hang down by the bait. The pantyhose got tangled in their teeth really well. You should see if you could incorporate it into your rope flies somehow for better hookups. Can't wait to see the video and more pics! Paul MOsmallies Great.....now my wife is going to wonder why I am buying pantyhose. My Youtube Channel
DaddyO Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Great.....now my wife is going to wonder why I am buying pantyhose. Don't buy the pantyhose. Steal hers. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
Lancer09 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 What kind of rope were you using. I know a place on the ozarks where they are EVERYWHERE that I fish pretty frequently when I make it up that way, but I can't ever get a hook stuck in one. I had a deciever nearly torn up by gar this past weekend.

Fray it out and loop it through these steel rings (http://www.feather-craft.com/wecs.php?store=feacraft&action=display&target=GS562), tie it off behind the ring, Clear Cure Goo it and you are done....eyes are optional. Wayne SW/MO Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 We always used the white nylon rope, 1/8" I think, the one that is made up of real fine filaments. We looped ours through swivels and then brushed them out with gun cleaning brushes after unraveling them. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
OzarksRiverman Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Nice! I saw that pic in the Ozark County Times last week.
LarrySTL Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 OK... I get it..nylon rope, etc. Reel him in. Now what ? How do we unhook him/her/it without losing a few fingers along the way ? Please do excuse my sarcasm, because the question itself is sincere. http://intervenehere.com
