txspecks04 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Does anyone ever night fish out on this tailwater? I have never done so myself, but I am planning a trip out this Friday night and am looking for some pointers. I will be fly fishing and I understand from some reading of the Taneycomo threads that throwing large streamers is the way to go at night up there. I assume it will be the same here. Any ideas on what size/color/type flies I should be thinking about? Thanks in advance for any help!
laker67 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I have never fished beaver, but I would assume that it would be alot like taney after dark. When the streamer bite is working, there is probably no better way to catch all sizes of fish. From what I understand, beaver does not have the population of fish that taney has, and most certainly alot fewer big fish. I am not much on streamers so I fish sowbugs and scuds at night and it too can be an effective way of catching fish. I use two methods, under a lighted indictor in the riffles and tailouts, and a "snipping" method similar to streamer fishing. Both methods work for me. Now, the sowbugs I use are big, size 10 mostly but sometimes an 8. Does not matter so much what color as long as they are grey or tan. Between the end of july through november last season, I caught 52 fish between 3.5 and 12.5 using these two methods. I am not sure that one method is any better than the other. Had probably 2 handfuls of fish between 5 and 7 lbs.
sfiser Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 i night fish it now and then, mainly in the fall and winter. One thing to remember is the average size fish is smaller than Taneycomo.. you cant really even compare the fishing in the 2 places because Taney is a much better fishery. However Beaver has its fair share of nice fish. Go into the artificial bait zone (was known as catch and release zone until a few years back) and fish the first shoal and the deeper holes below that with a wooly bugger.. i wouldnt go any larger than maybe a size 6. also the smaller sculpzilla (you can get them at mclellans in fayetteville) is a good one to try as well. If you swing a wooly bugger, you should catch some fish
txspecks04 Posted August 24, 2012 Author Posted August 24, 2012 Thanks for the input! I'll try and get a post-trip report up sometime Saturday.
txspecks04 Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 Well, hit the Parker Bottoms Access last night from about 11:30-1:30. Went hero or zero with the flies I was throwing and wound up on the zero end of the equation. Didn't find any interest at all. Did see a Pygmy Rattlesnake out there, pretty cool.
