Photographer Laura Simon captured this photo at Cape Rock earlier this month, demonstrating the low river level.

River levels along the Mississippi continue to drop, and are expected to stay low at least into fall.

The low water has caused closures of stretches of river -- one 11-mile stretch just reopened -- which has in turned caused the shipping business to take a big hit. In Memphis, the river level is reaching a record low.

I wonder where flow levels stand historically. Like Al said in another river level thread the gauge level changes over the years due to silt build up, etc.

I was down at caruthersville the other day and that river is looking awfully calm and serene. The channel diversion arms are about 30' tall down there.

I did a fairly quick check of the various river gauges, and none of the major Ozark streams are at record lows for this date, though all are well below normal and a few aren't far from the record low. The Mississippi at the Chester bridge is not far from the record low, but is still a bit above it as well. Interestingly, some of the Ozark streams that I checked in the earlier thread, back in early July I believe it was, are now flowing a bit more water than they were then.
