I agree with hiring a guide- makes a huge difference... but I couldn't afford it either so I understand that part. The White is so different and big that it can be really difficult to nail down a pattern if you've never been there. Night fishing is a blast- I usually use big black buggers (size 2)- really ugly ones too, sometimes with a loose deer hair head to push water.
