It was cold, windy, and rainy saterday. I was stranded at Truman Lake with mecanical difficultires so I went down to the back end of a cove and threw out some canned corn for carp.

I had two bites before it got dark. Both of them straited the light bass worm hooks I was stuck using. I could see glimpses of yellow as they where bucking back and forth. Those carp can really put a bend in rod; at least until the hook gives way.

Now I have to go looking for a better bait hook for carp.

gammy live bait number 4s & 2s, temco 2457's size 6

a hair rig works best, and you will put most of the fish you hook on the bank

also going toe to toe with even an averager size carp is a tackle busting affair on most gear. any a non-forged hook is normally is history

once hooked let them run out line.. as that 1st run is a sizzler,

most of the reels I use have 200 yards or more line, we need it as a long run at the end of a long cast would be unforunate with a small line reserve!

the rods we use are normally 12 foot and can cast 3-6 oz over 100 yards

if you have a flipping stick and a 6500 abu it will work fine just keep your lead size smaller than 1.5 oz

look at hooks and rigs,at the site below that will be a start

hope that helps

MoCarp, I was using an 11' Preditor spinning rod and 20 pound test Tec Tan mono.

That fish wasn't making a run when he stritented the hook. From hook set, I only had him for two maybe three seconds. I really don't think he had time to get aimed in one direction yet. I set the hook, saw the gold bucking under the surface, looked up to see the bend in the rod, looked back toward the fish, and it was all over. Never even made a crank on the handle.

I have watched carp in that cove that I know had to weight 20 pounds. They will be lazing along and they will come to a log that is down in the water and they will have to turn sideways to swim over it and their back is still out of the water.

I figure If I am ever going to catch a 20 pound plus fish in Missouri, I will have to chase carp, catfish, spoonbill and maybe an accidental gar. Carp are by far the shortest drive.

Mustad also makes a live bait hook, and they are cheaper then the Gammy's. They can use a swipe or two from a stone though.

Sounds like you have a place to have some fun Flem.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I am not too hung up on namebrands. When I want a tough hook for big fish I use stainless steel.

I would rather be fishin'.

Wayne, as far as carp are concerned, I would guess the back of any cove in Truman Lake is a good place to have some fun.
