I would like some opinions about a go-to rod and reel setup for crappie fishing on TR.

I got a nice gift certificate for my birthday and think I might upgrade my crappie spinning rig.

Suggestions? / comments?

thanks

I'm fishing some OLD school Shimano Aero spinning rods 6'6" 2 piece rods with SS 1300's. I'm throwing my jigs on 6 lb P Line CX premium, but I will likely be getting some 4 lb as well. I'd love to have some Loomis 720 GLX or GL3 SJR, but I haven't spent the money yet.

I bought one of the new St Croix Panfish 7 foot "Fast" action spinning rods and it is a DEAD noodle. I like it fine for finesse cranks and jerkbaits for trout, but it has ABSOLUTELY no place for crappie jig fishing. Of course it would also fish minnows like a champ, but most rods will. I was also pretty darn disappointed with a St Croix Avid that they claimed was a lLight rid with fast action. NOT HARDLY.

I picked up a couple Wally Marshall "Tuxedo Black" 7' rods this spring. I really like them for any type of casting application.

I have a 10' BnM, Sam Heaton that I really like for fishing vertical around pole timber or on the outside of docks.

and a little 4.5' browning micro that I use for shooting docks or fishing inside of docks.

I kind of like to have a long rod, a medium rod, and a short rod laying on the deck when I'm crappie fishing.

I spool them all up with 4/15 braid and usually have some kind of little UL shimano reel on them. I couldn't really even tell you the make of my reels.

I have fished for crappie from Alabama, Georgia and Missouri. The combo I use is inexpensive but works great. I have used it for trout, crappie and other spieces. What I use is this. Okuma advenger 30 ( sold at wlamart for $30) I put it on a 7' 6" Bass pro microlight graphite rod.. APX $40. I also use the Bass Pro camo line in four pound test. This has worked well for me.. I have caught numerous crappie over two pounds with no issues ( mostly in Alabama). I like the Okuma. It has been the best real I have owned..Just my opinion..I have only been fishing for 35 years or so... The more expensive rod and reel combos may "feel" better but hte way I see it, a Chevy truck works as well as an escalade,
