jdmidwest Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 I finally got a pretty decent weekend for a change. Launched out of Whitten on the way to Riverton on Sat, and was into fish real quick. First fish of the day was a nice 18" bow in full fall colors. Several more came to hand as we floated the jet boat down the river, all on a shad rap. I decided to start fly fishing for a while when the fish started getting spooky and picked up a few on that. Then, the kids wanted a jet boat ride so I hopped in the canoe with one of my friends while the other took their 2 sons for a while. We floated and picked up a few more on the spinning rod. Then it happened, jet boat trolling motor got caught on a log and ripped it right off the mount. Second, when my buddy was running a shoal, he slowed down and back end dropped down and caught a rock. When we caught up to him at the Bay Hollow Bluff, he has beached the boat and was bailing water. I spent the rest of the trip down the river with my fist and a plastic ice bag plugging the hole and operating the drain plug to let it suck out the water. Did I mention the bilge pump did not work very good? Camped at Hufstedler's and rented boats for Sunday to float the Riverton to 142 area. This was the first time I have ever been on that area. And it is probably one of the most scenic. It was nicer than the Thomasville float. It is not the fields and lowlands I was expecting, there were plenty of big bluffs and rocky holes. Smallies, pickerel, and a few largemouth all were landed to our spinning gear. There are some long slow holes down there, but it is worth the trip. Ted Calcaterra Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 I too own a jet boat and have hit rock twice. Have you or anyone considered putting umhw on the bottom to make it glide over rocks? Some boat manufacturers are doing it now. Ted

Greasy B Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE or sometimes shortened to UHMW) If UHMW lined jet boat hulls become common we'll loose what little peace and quite low water conditions give us. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. Ted Calcaterra Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 I hear you but the folks in my boat who almost went flying out would appreciate it. Anything to improve safety is a good thing.
