Tim Smith Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I doubt there are enough to make it worth anyone's effort now to collect them, but because it takes them a while to mature, I'm sure this jump started the decline. As crazy as it sounds some even think of keeping rare species as "conservation" because they're "helping" the species survive...despite the fact that the vast majority of pets die with no hope of ever reproducing. That said, keeping common aquatic species probably does little harm...on balance it might even be a good thing.
Riverwhy Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 The lower end of Bryant Creek has always held a few Hellbenders. I have caught several on live bait but I would never intentionally harm these creatures. The picture of the one in clear water is priceless.
Gavin Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 If you know where they are...dont say.....Dr. XYZ. at the zoo says so.
Tim Smith Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 If you know where they are...dont say.....Dr. XYZ. at the zoo says so. Agree with that. Too many people out there with selfish intentions and low ethics.
Al Agnew Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 I believe I saw one in the wild long ago, but can't remember any of the details. I'd really love to see one. Mud puppies...I have caught a number of them while winter walleye fishing on Black River and in the Diversion Channel. They attacked the live minnows I was using. Interesting thing about them was that they invariably grabbed the minnow at the belly, and apparently attempted to chew through the belly to get into the guts of the minnow. Once in a while I'd hook one, always on a smaller minnow where it decided to actually swallow the minnow instead of just chewing its guts out.
Brian Wise Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I saw one on the NFOW 2 days after they were added to the Endangered Species list. Almost stepped on one on high water a few years ago too. Very cool things to watch. My Youtube Channel

lee G. Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 If you dont want to trade for a spotted owl, Ive got an even better deal. How about my Pileated woodpecker. I put some white paint on him. He looks just like an Ivory billed woodpecker. Every couple of years I take him down to arkansas and let him fly around. It really stirs them up down there!
