Quillback Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Fished with Jeb today, we roamed from Big M up to the mouth of the Kings and went up the Kings a mile or two. Mainly we were looking for steep chunk rock banks, when we found one that looked like it had possiblities we'd stop and fish it. Had a good quantity day, not much quality, caught 30 bass, mainly 12-14" spots. Biggest fish was 2 lbs. and we may have had 4 or 5 that might have made it to the 15" mark, but not by much. Green Pumpkin tube accounted for 20 or so, the rest came on Senkos and jigs. Not much wind, but threw a blade around a couple of places where there was a breeze, but no takers on the blade. Nice day to be out, saw several eagles, not much boat traffic.
Members Ultralance12 Posted December 7, 2012 Members Posted December 7, 2012 Excellent. Im going to try some new spots this weekend. I have only been fishing 4 or 5 places near the island (near the slip) but have been wanting to fish up the kings.
Guest Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 the wart bite was very good on those type of banks today. 10 on the jig and 25 on the wart Wart = Quality bites
Members Ultralance12 Posted December 7, 2012 Members Posted December 7, 2012 I wish i had a clue how to fish the wart. Never had any luck on TRL with stick or crank baits. Unless top water is on i just throw jig or dropshot spoon. Makes it simple but someday im going to need a few more weapons in my arsenal. Maybe i need to hire a guide...anyone free sat or sun?

I'm by no means an expert in fishing a wart on the rock but I think one of the biggest mistakes I used to make with it was fishing it too fast. I was lucky enough to fish with a couple really good wart fishermen that taught me a little bit on how to fish them. Seems like they hunt a lot better and kick out more on the deflection with a slower retrieve than a regular cranking clip. I know one of the guys that fishes the lake a lot more can give more info than that but that's just my observations.
Guest Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Slower is better when it cools down. Ive had them follow it to the boat and hit with 10ft of line out. Light line (8-10lb) and rod flexibilty (medium action) are crucial. I make a pass down the bank with a WW, then go back thru it with a square bill. This time targeting stumps that are barely visible on steeper banks. I like to race the SB up to the stump and hit it real hard, then PAUSE.....and sweep the rod and start slow cranking. The bait will kinda roll and shift, looking like the real thing.. Thats when quality bites occur, for me. If the jig bite or spoon is dead, fish the crankbait the rest of the day. eventually, you will get on the right bank with a few fish.
Members Ultralance12 Posted December 8, 2012 Members Posted December 8, 2012 Excellent. Just got a new rod for those kinds of lures today that is medium action. Took it down to the dock to play around and was reeling real slow up in the light to watch the action and a big one swam by (and promptly saw me and left). I will definitely throw it around tomorrow.
