Wife's First Fly Fishing Trip

That's awesome DaddyO! My wife also picked out all of her own stuff. The times I've taken her fishing have come with mixed results. She doesn't much care for the cold water! She also made up this rule, which has been enforced a time or two, that if I catch 10 fish before she gets one then we have to go home! It's not like I'd set her up for failure, I want her to enjoy fly fishing and I want her to be successful! I've gone as far as tying on the fly and casting the fly into the same exact spot I had caught fish out of! One of my fondest memories was watching her actually catch a fish all on her own. She was like a kid on Christmas! "I caught a fish, I caught a fish" I believe were her exact words. I acted as the net man on the bruiser of a rainbow that came in at about 10 inches long! Once it warms up and the baby comes out, I'm hoping we'll get to take more trips!

Ha! If she was excited about catching the fish, I'm sure that you'll have more trips with her in the future. You, too, are a lucky man!

Today, I sent my wife a link to the Women Fly Fishing on the Orvis website. Next thing I know, she's sending me an email showing me that she just signed up for Trout Unlimited because women can join for FREE right now.

My wife and I are still in the negotiating stage and she is ever so lightly leaning towards giving it a try. So I may just make a reservation at Montauk for this spring. If she doesn't come I'm sure my buddy will.

We spent some time in the yard learning to cast.

The cast started out a little rough but got better as the day progressed.

I literally have got behind and grabbed the rod hand of people I'm trying to help cast and made a cast. I then ask them, could they tell a difference? They all said yes. I'm no jedi master at casting but just doing this little thing helped most of the newbies I fished with get to fishing on their own quicker.

I took my wife to Roaring River shortly after we were married 42 years ago. She caught a nice trout (her first) and I later had it mounted. It still hangs in the family room. Problem is that she hasn't fished since. She's afraid of water. She doesn't even like to be on a boat, including ships.

The best part is that she still encourages me to go fishing and play golf and wants to go along whenever we go to Taney. I go fishing and she enjoys shopping around the Branson area. I was very active in the Missouri Trout Fishermans Association in my early days and we had many good times together with that group where most of my old buddies are now no longer with us. Even so, she was a great part of our activities. We have stayed at Lilleys Landing longer than Phil has owned the place (Approximately 28 years with Phil). They are truly great friends and I include their kids and staff as great friends also.

Ellen is a great wife and a keeper.

I have gotten my wife to go trout fishing a few time with me this last year. She wouldn't try fly fishing but is learning how to throw an ultralight pretty well. I got her waders, net and her own light tackle and she now tells her friends that she did not know that wearing waders, thigh deep in a river fishing for trout was on her bucket list. Now she has even been the one to ask me about going fishing. I have hope of being able to get her to atleast try a fly rod. Fishing, another thing we have found we like doing together.

Hey man, that's just too cool that you got the wife to go out with you. Awesome pic too. Aint it crazy how bright their faces get and how they get all super happy when they catch a fish! They just go nuts! Nice pink rod too. I got my gf 2 pink spinning rods a while ago. Recently I get her some waders, hip bag, and a fly rod set up. We have been to Roaring River twice in the past three weeks. I have spent a good deal of time untying wind knots, climbing trees to retrieve flies, and handing over the best water to her, I have loved every minute of it! There's a every Tuesday night 4 week beginner's program being put on by a local fly fishing club coming up in Feb and I got her signed up, and really she's looking forward to it. We haven't caught a ton of fish yet but being out there and getting to have her participating in my world was a cool deal. Hey, in a year she'll probably be takin' me to school, just watch! It is proven that women are better welders, so why not? Tight lines fellas.
