cwc87 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Last Wednesday water was 37 degrees today it reached 53. A nice rain and the fish will start moving upstream . I did see a pack of 20 smallies hanging in a deep hole above hwy 8 today. I will try to keep reporting here at least once per week.
Greasy B Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Yes please keep us updated. I thought late January would be a bit early for fish movement, but I don’t spend enough time on rivers this time of year to see it. I guess I always figured March was the month the fish moved around and by early April they are mostly settled in where they’ll be for the spring season. You may want to turn up the vague-meter just a little if you intend to fish for any of those smallies. Maybe just mention you saw them on the move and not give their home address and the code to the garage door.
cwc87 Posted January 30, 2013 Author Posted January 30, 2013 I'm not too worried most folks on this forum are catch and release. Plus the gates are locked on all four sides at HWY 8.
Al Agnew Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Cory, I'll be there tomorrow Wow, that's a big change in temps. I wonder how much the temperature of the middle Meramec changed. It would surprise me if that sudden jump in temperature made them start moving. Maybe it made the ones that were already there but hunkered down and well hidden to come out of hiding and look for something to eat. With the warm rain we're getting now, who knows what will happen. But by tomorrow night it will be dropping quickly again. Yesterday, I noticed lots of minnows and sunfish hanging right against the bank in inches of water, apparently enjoying the warmth being soaked up by shallow, still water. We're getting a lot of rain here tonight. It's raining cats and dogs as I type this. We could be seeing a warm flood on the rivers. Wonder what THAT will make the fish do.
cwc87 Posted January 30, 2013 Author Posted January 30, 2013 River just topped out with a 6.5 ft rise which is just seeping out of its banks in spots. The water temp topped out at 53 and now is staying at 49. These creeks need a good flushing to get rid of rock snot and hopefully throw some gravel around to create new fishing holes. Things should b fish able by later Friday I'm planning to go Saturday afternoon.
