sandbc Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 planning an early april crappie fishing trip to lake arkabutla in mississippi and was wondering if anyone had ever been there. i hear they have some very nice crappie there. let me know.
Ham Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Only in my dreams. Infisherman did a recent story about a group of lakes in Mississippi that had giant crappie. Like always though ppl take it for granted and keep too many of the giants. Maximum size may be down a bit, but you still have a real shout at a personal best crappie. They had tips and tactics listed. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
RSBreth Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Ham said what I was thinking - I'd hit up the In-Fisherman guys for more info - they've done several stories on the NW Miss Crappie Lakes. Giant Crappies South
Guest Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I grew up fishing Sardis, Enid & Arkabutla in Miss. Think huge shallow mud flats with scattered brushpiles. Creek channels are filled in totally from silt. The locals sink those brushpiles offshore. I'm sure the side imaging tech could help you locate them. Fish a blk/Chrt crappie tube on 1/16oz jighead with a clip on bobber 12"-18" deep. I spoke to a biologist about that lake. He told me they've shocked 6lb crappie in there. No lie. I've seen 3lbers caught routinely at those lakes. Good luck
sandbc Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 thanks trophy. thats what i wanted to hear. ive done a lot of online research on the lake and have found the same info on the muddy water and large crappie. I am from Clinton Mo. originally and was there when truman lake went in so fishing the upper grand river arm of the lake most of the time i am used to the muddy water conditions. the thing that bothers me most about arkabutla is the constantly changing water levels. I know it is a flood control lake and they have to play the weather forecast game but when you plan a trip on specific dates it gets a little scarey when you dont know the area. I plan on fishing 4 days the first weekend in april. just hope the weather cooperates and the wind doesnt blow me off the lake. My wife is going but we will stay at a tunica casino. if i catch fish the first day then she we join me on the lake but if not i am afraid she will just help the local economy if you know what i mean. if i dont have luck there then i thought about going to sardis lake as i have read about the success there too. thanks again for the info and if anyone else knows more please leave a reply. stacey
Guest Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Low water can be a very big headache on these lakes. Most of the locals drive down to the lake and walk the banks in April. Its easier than trying to navigate that shallow mess. DONT drive your truck onto the lake bed, Ive done it and it wasnt fun.
