Members Lucas K Posted February 23, 2013 Members Posted February 23, 2013 I hear so many people talk about using the jig and float rig effectively on Taneycomo. What's the secret? How do I rig this trout-slaying contraption? How do I fish it? I would love to hear some insight from Mr. Lilley since he talks about it in the fishing reports alot. I'm hoping to use this (if it's a good approach) sometime this weekend in my endeavors down from Springfield. I would appreciate anyones expertise in this area.
Dutch Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 There really is very much to it. If using it on a fly rod then you need those little foam "strike indicators" (bobbers). You need larger ones, maybe even weighted, for spinning tackle. I use a 1 or 2 # leader when I fish this way for trout. Depending on the water depth, you need anywhere from a 5-12' leader. 1/80 or 1/100 th ounce jigs work best for me. I cast out and let the bait settle. With a fly rod I knit and pearl watching the float at all times. If it goes down I set the hook. With spinning gear a very very very slow retrieve watching the float.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 23, 2013 Root Admin Posted February 23, 2013 http://www.ozarkanglers.com/lake-taneycomo/jig-fishing/ I cover jig and float fishing in this article. Babler is also a good source. After reading this, ask any questions you have.
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 I believe there was a video of some jig fishing from a boat on here at one time. Maybe someone knows where it is at. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Josh Holt Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 I have found useing this rig it helps to have just enough wind to ripple the water that way the jig bounces under the float. If there is no wind jut kinda shake the float a little then let it settle has the same effect.
Members Lucas K Posted February 24, 2013 Author Members Posted February 24, 2013 Phil, that article was very informative and helpful. Thank you so much for posting that and thank you to everyone for commenting back. I hope I get the chance to get back on Taneycomo very soon and catch more trout!
